Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia, also known as Ayasofya, is one of the most iconic structures in Istanbul, Turkey, and indeed the world. Its name literally means "Holy Wisdom," and it has been a spiritual and cultural center for over a thousand years. This magnificent building has witnessed many different eras, from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman Empire and beyond, and has been a witness to countless historical events.

The first Hagia Sophia was built in the early fourth century AD by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. At the time, Istanbul was known as Constantinople, and this new church was intended to be a symbol of the new Christian Empire that Constantine had established. The original Hagia Sophia was relatively small, and it was destroyed during a riot in 404 AD.

The second Hagia Sophia was built in 415 AD by the Emperor Theodosius II, and it was destroyed during the Nika riots in 532 AD.
