A vibrant coastal town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is known for its breathtaking beaches, crystal-clear waters, and exciting nightlife. Thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty, Hikkaduwa is one of the most popular coastal destinations in the country. In addition to swimming, surfing, and sunbathing, visitors can also enjoy snorkelling and diving in the coral reefs located just off the shore of Hikkaduwa.

Beach activities

Hikkaduwa is famous for its beaches, and there are plenty of activities to enjoy on the sand and in the water.

One of the most popular activities is surfing. Hikkaduwa has some of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka, and surfers from all over the world flock here to catch some waves. You can also try snorkelling or scuba diving to explore the beautiful coral reefs and marine life that thrive just off the coast. This Sri Lankan coastal town features several wildlife reserves where you can see the country’s native animals. The Hikkaduwa Turtle Hatchery is a must-visit for animal lovers. Here, you can see newly hatched turtles and learn about the conservation efforts undertaken to protect these endangered creatures.

Another exciting wildlife encounter is the Madu River Safari, where you can take a boat ride through the mangrove forests and spot exotic birds, lizards, and crocodiles.

Cultural attractions

Hikkaduwa is one of the many places where you can get a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.

Seenigama Temple: This temple is located on a small island off the coast of Hikkaduwa and is a popular pilgrimage site for both locals and tourists.

Hikkaduwa Railway Station: The railway station is a classic example of Sri Lankan colonial architecture.

Tsunami Honganji Vihara: This temple was built after the 2004 tsunami as a memorial to the victims and to promote interfaith harmony. It features a Buddha statue and a museum.

Nightlife

Hikkaduwa has a vibrant nightlife scene, with plenty of bars, clubs, and beach parties to keep you entertained. Bars and pubs usually stay open until late, and the parties last until the early hours of the morning.

Food and drinks

Sri Lankan cuisine is known for its bold flavours and spices, and Hikkaduwa is a great place to try some of the local delicacies. Seafood is a popular choice, and you can find everything from fresh fish to crab and lobster at the local restaurants. If you are feeling adventurous, try some of the local street food, like kottu roti, a stir-fried dish made with shredded roti bread and vegetables. Hikkaduwa is also famous for its fresh fruit smoothies.

Many hotels and resorts also offer yoga experiences as well as an array of rejuvenating spa treatments. For those looking for a more immersive wellness experience, there are also retreat centers in the area that offer yoga, meditation, and wellness workshops, providing a peaceful sanctuary for guests to relax, recharge, and reconnect with themselves.

Shopping

Hikkaduwa has a bustling market scene that offers everything from souvenirs to fresh produce. The Sunday Market, for example, is a popular destination where vendors sell handmade crafts, clothing, and local snacks. You can also visit the Hikkaduwa Fish Market to see the daily catch and try some of the freshest seafood in town.

Day trips

Hikkaduwa is a great base for exploring the surrounding areas. You can take a day trip to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its colonial architecture and ancient fortifications.
