Germany continues to be one of the most visited tourist destinations, attracting some 33 million visitors in 2014. One reason that it has gained in popularity is due to the hospitality of the people, its unique culture, vibrant cities, charming towns and villages, famed castles and the overall beauty that Germany is known for.

While air travel is the easiest and fastest way of getting from point A to point B in Germany, exploring the country by car, train or cruise ship can be a more pleasant experience. It allows the visitor to experience the country in a relaxed fashion at their own pace, discovering places that might otherwise have been missed. It's also a more economical way of getting around the country no matter what age.

Touring Germany by Car

Germany is often referred to as the Land of Fairy tales, and the best way to discover this beautiful country is by automobile. Countless scenic routes crisscross the country allowing the visitor to explore castles, legendary forests and rivers, charming towns and villages while viewing the magnificent landscape.

With its vast forests and dramatic landscapes of mountain peaks and valleys filled with stunning natural beauty, visitors can enjoy a lifetime's worth of exploration in Germany by automobile.

Germany has many beautiful cities with a rich cultural history that you can explore by car. For example, you can visit Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich only a day’s drive away. You can also visit the most famous castles in Germany like Neuschwanstein Castle or Hohenschwangau Castle to get a glimpse of German royalty. If you are more interested in nature, there are many forests and lakes that await your discovery in Germany as well!

Most major car rental companies offer packages for the budget-minded traveler. Check online with companies such as Avis, Hertz, Alamo, and Budget for the latest deals.

German River Cruises

For a more-relaxed experience, consider exploring Germany from a different angle on board a cruise ship. A river cruise on Germany's grand waterways makes it possible for the tourist to observe Germany's landscape that can't be seen with other modes of transportation. A river cruise takes tourists past vineyards stretched out high above hills, medieval castles overlooking the valley, breathtaking mountain views and historic towns. The journey takes place on board a riverboat that can range from a small, cozy ship to a larger ship that can accommodate up to several hundred people.

While rates can fluctuate somewhat with each cruise company, a good number of great deals are available especially for tourists that are flexible. Several river cruises offer longer itineraries that include reduced hotel accommodations. These excursions are convenient since they arrange everything for the tourist, allowing free time and relaxation while enjoying the scenery. They're easy on the wallet because most everything is included in the upfront cost.

Explore Germany by Train

Germany's trains are world famous for their efficiency, speed, and affordable price. That's good news for the budget-minded traveler looking for another option to get around Germany. For example, adding two additional first/third class tickets before boarding lets you save money compared with bringing every individual passenger up onto 1st Class seating which takes longer after 3rd class cabins by standing room only fare machines. Train travel allows travelers to sit back and relax while enjoying the German countryside without the extra stress that comes with airline travel. Train travel also provides the traveler the opportunity to meet fellow passengers, additionally making new friendships.

Germany's landscape is diverse, providing breathtaking views of magnificent mountains, countryside, rolling meadows, and cosmopolitan cities; another reason why train travel is the most convenient way to see Germany. Travelers will find a variety of interesting cities to visit such as Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne. Follow the Romantic Road to Heidelberg, Germany's famous university town, and a visit to the medieval town of Rothenburg.

However, don't overlook the amenities provided on board the trains. Train packages made available by German train travel can range from the basic to the most lavish. Check with the website to see what packages are available during your visit to Germany.
