Couples Travel – The Best Cities for Couples

Just over a year ago we – the terrible travelling couple that we are – had a hairbrained idea to city hop our way through the world and somehow we are managing to do just that albeit with a few stops in more remote locations, usually when there is snow or a beach involved. As a result of over one year of staying in cities we grew to love I thought it worth highlighting a small collection of the best cities for couples travel for duos looking for city-breaks, a romantic escape or a new city to explore.

1. Amsterdam

We lived in Amsterdam for three months last year and we’re itching to go back, find ourselves another pair of rusty bikes and find more canal-lined streets to wobble down. Here are my tips on how to experience Amsterdam as a romantic destination and where to find some lovely restaurants.

2. Quebec

It may seem a little strange that I’m including a city I visited on my own in this list, however, I became immediately enamoured with Quebec and spent a fair bit of time looking for a tele-transporter or a magic wand so I could get my boyfriend by my side to wander the romantic cobbled streets and admire the views from the promenade.

3. Berlin

Another cycle friendly city, Berlin is still holding on to its title as number one city for hipster couples thanks to sights like the East Side Gallery and a wide range of restaurants from all over the world. Even though we were only there for a week I believe we ate almost ten different types of cuisine and we loved exploring the city’s eclectic neighbourhoods by bike.

4. Helsinki

A winter wonderland of a city for half the year – the half that we visited it in – I can only imagine how much fun Helsinki is in the summer when warm weather and long summer nights arrive. Having said that there was something romantic about wrapping up warm and clomping around in the snow together, helping each other to not fall over on the ice. We also found some romantic restaurants to dine in and a comfortable hotel to crash in too.

5. London

The city where our romance began, I’ve written previously about how we fell in love in London, but London is also a dream destination for anyone already in love and wanting to fill a weekend or longer with activities including free museums, lively farmers’ markets and some of the best shopping in the world.

6. Kuala Lumpur

We have used Kuala Lumpur as a base for a number of our adventures in Southeast Asia and yet have never highlighted its charms as a great city to explore thanks to its modern v. traditional mix of culture and a restaurant and bar scene to rival the best of them. Our favourite night was spent in a little known jazz club called No Black Tie and for the best views of the Petronas Towers head up to the rooftop bar in Traders hotel.

7. Sydney

My boyfriend’s home city holds a special place in both our hearts and so for us it’s easy to call this one of the best cities in the world. However, few will argue that it has some of the best views of any city in the world thanks to the curves and reflections of the Harbour’s water. For a romantic picnic pitch up in the park at Ball’s Head Reserve which has some of those spectacular views and virtually no crowds even in summer.

8. Lisbon

This is another city that I may have visited on my own recently but this didn’t stop me imagining my partner and I climbing up Alfama’s narrow alleyways to find a traditional tavern to eat salted codfish in whilst listening to some live Fado music. Either way watching the sun go down from one of Lisbon’s viewpoints is an absolute must for any pair of lovers.

9. Narbonne

The list’s wildcard, Narbonne is a great little city to stay in for a weekend or may thanks to Roman and Medieval ruins, a number of great restaurants and bars and also its proximity to some of the nicest – and warmest! – beaches on the French Mediterranean coast. Can you blame us for staying there for over a month last summer?

10. Marrakech

Our current stomping ground, Marrakech is surprising us not by its colourful Medina, nor its quirky souks and delicious tagines, but this is a city built for getting lost in full of romantic riads to stay in and colonial style tea shops to sip sweet mint tea in together. And did I mention that it already feels like summer here?
