Norway

Stetind was unofficially named Norway's national mountain in 2002. Author and mountaineer Peter Wessel Zapple gave this mountain the description going by its smooth, steep shape as “an anvil whereupon the Gods can hammer”. It is located in the municipality of Narvik in Nordland County.

France

Aiguille du Dru is a peak in the Mont Blanc Mountain range in the French Alps. It is a jutting peak called "aiguille" which in translation means "needle." The granite rock peak rises to 3,754m and is coupled with a lower peak Petit Dru at 3,733m.

Matterhorn Pennine Alps Switzerland/Italy

The Matterhorn has long been known to be one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. It has been credited with the birth of Alpinism in the mid-19th century. The Matterhorn straddles the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is successfully climbed to its summit by thousands of climbers each year.

Even though Mount Vesuvius once destroyed the Roman city of Pompei this volcanic mountain had now become a tourist destination. Mount Vesuvius is located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy. It has been selected to be a part of various movies and remains active up to this day.

Greece

Legend has it that at one time Mount Olympus in Greece was home to twelve gods. It is part of the Olympus Mountain range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia. It is a mountain that holds a fascination for many and those that climb it might hope to meet up with the mythological gods.

Asia

Himalayas Nepal

Ama Dablam is looked upon to be one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. It is located in the very heart of Everest's Khumbu Region. It is part of the eastern Himalayan range of Province No. 1, Nepal, The mountain rises above the Thyangboche Monastery found on the Everest Base Camp Trek.

Being so very picturesque Google used a photo of Ama Dablam as the background of an early version of Gmail and Apple used it as wallpaper in IOS 7.

Machapuchare is a sacred peak in the Hindu religion and associated with the god Shiva. It is located in the Annapurna massif part of the Himalayas of Gandaki Pradesh in north-central Nepal. To respect the Hindu religious customs no one has set foot on the very summit but there are climbers who have climbed this mountain usually stopping short of the summit.

China

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. At its very summit are the leading astronomical observatories in the world. It has an international border stretching between Nepal and China.

Mount Huangshan or Yellow Mountain is a beautiful mountain with huge rock formations. It is located in southern Anhui Province in eastern China. It is always covered by a layer of mist. It got its name during the Tang Dynasty in 747. The best hiking can be done during the high season from April to October.

Japan

In Japan Mount Fuji has become a top tourist attraction. It is one of the most massive volcanic mountains in the world and still remains active. Mount Fuji is located on the island of Honshu and is the highest mountain in Japan. It is a favorite of hikers in July and August.

Pakistan

Laila Peak has a needlepoint summit and is in competition with Ama Dablam for the title of the most beautiful mountain in Asia. It is located in Hushe Valley near Gondogoro Glacier in the Karakoram Mountain range. The first ascent was made by a four-man British team in 1987.

Australia

Cradle Mountain is a beautiful mountain that overlooks Dove Lake. It is the highlight of Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Claire National Park. Located in the Central Highland region of Tasmania it has become a tourist attraction.

Africa

Madagascar

The Tsaranoro Massif in Madagascar features orange-streaked granite walls. Even though most of the walls can be scaled in a day the route is considered to be one of the hardest multi-pitch routes in the world.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the African continent in the country of Tanzania. It is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and a volcano. Tourists come to enjoy Kilimanjaro National Park which is home to Western white and black colobuses, blue monkeys, elephants, cape buffaloes, and leopards living in the forests.

Table Mountain is an interesting one with a flat summit. Compared to other mountains in the world it is among the smallest. It makes a dramatic background to the city of Cape Town the capital of South Africa.

Antarctica

Queen Maud Land, Antarctica

Ulvetanna is a sharp peak in Queen Maud Land Antarctica. Its name means "the wolf's tooth" in Norwegian. Ulvetanna was discovered by the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938. It was first climbed in 1994.

South America

Chile Andes

Los Cuernos del Paine is a set of sharp granite peaks in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile rising up to over 2,000m. These spiky peaks have wonderful names like Aleta de Tiburon or Shark's Fin, La Espada or The Sward, and La Hoja or The Blade. These are located halfway along the W Trek which is one of the best hiking trails in the national park.

Peru

Alpamayo is located in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca Mountain range in Peru. It has a steep pyramid-like shape. It is a highly favored summit.

Vinicunca is a colorful and lovely mountain in the Andes of Peru. It is known as the Rainbow Mountian and has colors of different hues that have been created by mineral deposits.

Chile/Argentina

Cerro Torres is a sheer and sharp pinnacle that juts out vertically from the Patagonian Ice Field. It is a difficult mountain to scale due to the dangerous layer of rime ice and buffeting winds.

North America

Canada

Mount Logan is the tallest mountain in Canada and the second-highest summit in North America. It is part of the Saint Elias Mountain range and is located in Kluane National Park and Reserve in southwestern Yukon. Hikers enjoy climbing while seeing a backdrop of dense forests and iced rivers.

Baffin Mountains Canada

Mount Thor is a peak in the Baffin Mountain range on the remote Baffin Island in Canada. Mount Thor is home to the greatest vertical drop in the world.

Grand Teton is the highest mountain in the Teton Mountain range and is located in the Grand Teton National Park in the US state of Wyoming. It has become one of the most famous mountains in the world. Grand Teton is entirely in the Snake River drainage basin.

Sierra Nevada California

Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park in the US state of California. One side of the mountain is a sheer face and the other three sides are smooth and round. It is part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. It counts as one of the world's best big wall climbs. It is accessible by the route known as Regular Northwest Face.
