Norway is a land of variations. Situated on the northernmost tip of continental Europe, it's a country where the sun never sets in summer and hardly rises in winter. I was lucky enough to observe this phenomenon personally during my recent vacation to Norway.

The Midnight Sun is a natural phenomenon that happens during the summer months in Norway. From late May until late July, the sun remains visible 24 hours a day north of the Arctic Circle. This happens because the earth's tilt offers Norway longer days during this time of year.

I arrived in Bodo, on May 27th, just in time to see the start of the Midnight Sun season. I was immediately impressed by how light it was, even at 11 pm at night! The next several days were just as sunny, and I rapidly grew familiar with not having any darkness at all.

It was an amazing experience chasing the Midnight Sun around Norway. Every day felt like one long extended sunset, and I was never sleepy because there was no nighttime! I would definitely recommend visiting Norway during the summer months if you want to witness this natural wonder for yourself.

Planning My Holiday in Norway

Norway is a great country with so much to offer travelers. If you are considering a holiday here, it is crucial to conduct your homework and plan ahead. Here are some things to consider when planning your trip to Norway:

-When to go:

The best time to visit Norway depends on what you want to see and do. If you want to observe the legendary midnight sun, then plan your vacation for late May or early June. However, keep in mind that this is also the busiest time of year in Norway, so expect higher prices and crowds. If you don’t mind lower temps, September and October are fantastic months to visit as well.

-How to get there:

Most travelers who visit Norway will fly into Oslo Airport (OSL). From there, you can easily find a connecting flight or take the train or bus to your final destination.

-Where to stay: Again, this depends on your own interests. If you wish to be based in a city, then Oslo might be a fantastic alternative. Or, if you prefer somewhere more rural and scenic, then consider staying in a small town or village located within one of Norway’s beautiful fjords.

Experiencing the Midnight Sun for the First Time

If you’ve never witnessed the midnight sun, chasing it is a must-do bucket list item. I was fortunate enough to mark this off my list recently when I visited Norway. Here’s what you may expect when you see the midnight sun for the first time.

In Norway, the midnight sun is visible from late May through late July. This means that for close to two months, the sun never sets below the horizon. As someone who’s used to a traditional day/night cycle, this was undoubtedly a unique and lovely experience.

One of the most amazing moments was watching the sunset… at 1 am. Since there wasn’t any twilight, the sun just slowly sunk lower and lower until it disappeared behind the mountains on the horizon. And then it rose again a few hours later!

If you’re seeking a memorable natural phenomenon to witness, chasing after the midnight sun is undoubtedly it.
