Best Places To Camp In North Carolina

It's highly recommended that you plan ahead and make reservations if you plan to spend a long time camping in a certain area. Because many areas offer camping in picnic and camping areas, you won't have to spend your entire vacation in one camp; instead, you can split the campsites up, and enjoy different areas of the area.

We've put together a list of some of the most popular camping areas in the state.

Buttermountain National Forest

Despite having one of the most forested areas located in the state, the Butter mountain National Forest offers a lot of different activities other than camping. You can find a number of very unique things to do in the area, and there are often some exciting new developments around the National Forest.

If you enjoy hiking, you'll love Butter mountain National Forest. There are miles and miles of hiking trails throughout the area, with more being added all the time.

You can also find many smaller hiking trails that have been created to bring the tourists up close to the wilderness areas. Whatever type of hiking you like most, you'll probably be doing it in Buttermountain National Forest.

Carolina Piedmont Wilderness

The Carolina Piedmont Wilderness is located in north Carolina's mountains, and is North Carolina's only wilderness and historic area.

While it is much less developed than Butter mountain National Forest, you will still be able to enjoy many diverse activities within the park.

One of the most popular activities in the area is horseback riding. You'll find trails that are perfect for horseback riding, as well as fun family hiking and biking trails.

Most of the trails are complete with great views, and there are even some that are challenging to even horseback riders.

Othalron National Wildlife Refuge

If you prefer to stay close to civilization, then one of the best places to camp in North Carolina is the OtherOn National Wildlife Refuge. While there are many wonderful activities around the area, you'll be able to do a lot of the same things in Others that you do in Butter mountain - horseback riding, biking, and hiking trails.

You should also consider equestrian nights, where many different horse shows will take place.

Great Lake Regional Park

The Great Lake Regional Park is located just south of Wilmington, and it too offers a number of different activities for you to enjoy, as well as an interpretive trail and parking area. You'll also find visitor information to help you learn about the area.

Camping in the area won't be the only thing to experience in Great Lake Regional Park; there are also trails for strolling along on the lake, as well as activities like fishing and water sports.

You'll also be very impressed with the different and unique places you'll pass through in your exploration.

Most of the camping facilities will allow you to make reservations, so you and your family can get the canoe, kayak, and Rvs that you need.

All of the facilities are located at a good price; not only that, they're also affordable.

Clecloth Nature Park

If you prefer a wilderness camping experience that is closer to the city lights, you'll love Clecloth Nature Park. You'll be able to go out in any of the many flat recreation areas throughout the park, or you can stay in the more luxurious lodging on Clecloth Lake.

This lake is one of the larger lakes within the park, and it is full of largemouth bass as well as bluegill, catfish, crappie, and bass.

Kurea National Wildlife Refuge

If you're traveling from the southeast, you'll absolutely need to check out Kurea National Wildlife Refuge. The facility was established in 1991, and is located in the northern portion of the Refuge.

This camping area is home to five unique species of wildlife:

  • Kareem Springs
  • Kimball Slough
  • Spruce Island
  • Little Lake Town
  • Parvinah

Each year, there are still many additions to the Kurea National Wildlife Refuge:

- In addition to its protection areas, Kurea also has ranger-supported bird-watching tours.

Once you've visited the refuge, you'll be able to take guided tours of the many acres that are available. Some of the tours will take you through a day-long seminar and others will take you to just one of the few remaining untouched areas within the park.

Either way, you'll be treated to a real tour of the beautiful Kurea National Wildlife Refuge.
