How This Athens Review Came to Be

Earlier this year (2021) my brother and I took a trip to Greece. We visited Athens and Corfu while there.  I figured I would give you my Athens review and also opinions on Corfu, Greece as well.  So, here is a very simple and fast break down for all of you.  Also, be sure to click the banner to get your next travel for a whole lot lower cost.  Cheap travel is good travel, don't you agree?  You will find the button for that just under the video slideshow of photos I took in Greece.

My Flight to Athens

My flight to Athens was actually a pretty easy one.  I started from Southeastern Georgia here in the states.  From there I had to fly into Atlanta and then on to Newark, NJ.  All together was about a four hour flight.  Wasn't bad, really.  There, I met up with my brother and we ended up  having to wait for several hours before the plane took off.  I didn't mind though; gave us time to catch up and stretch our legs before the longer flight.

After boarding the plane and taking off, we began the nine hour flight from Newark, NJ to Athens, Greece.  Like most people, I passed the time by watching movies, eating horrible food, and drinking a little bit of soda that was provided.  If you've ever been on a flight then you already know what this part was like.  In case you might be wondering, the flights up to Newark were with Delta Airlines and the one to Athens was with United Airlines.  Anyway, this is an Athens review... not an airlines review, so we'll move on.

Weather in Greece

Our trip was in June, so the weather in Greece was very hot and absurdly humid.  I currently live in the southeast and even I was complaining a little about the humidity and heat.  Having said that, it was well worth it to enjoy such an amazing and beautiful country.  Athens was hot as hell and this was made worse by the fact that hotels there do not leave the AC on when the room is unoccupied.  You have to insert your room key into a slot, turn the thermostat way down on the air conditioner unit and then wait for room to cool down.

Greece Currency

All over Athens and the rest of the country you will find that US dollars mean nothing.  Greece currency is the Euro and that is all they will take there.  You can use an American debit card or credit card, but if paying cash for anything at all, you have to have Euro.  Exchange rates go up and down all the time, but while we were in Athens (and Corfu) we found that if you add $2 to whatever the price is in Euro, then you'd get a pretty accurate price in US dollars.  It is worth noting that the airport in Athens does have an ATM that will allow you to withdraw Euro with your US debit card.  Of course, you should check with  your bank regarding the standards and rules for your account.

What Language is Spoken in Greece?

So, what language is spoken in Greece?  Greek, obviously.  Most everyone- especially in Athens- speaks and understands English just fine.  We did encounter a few people who only spoke Greek and even more that spoke another European language too.  Of course, you could go the extra mile and learn Greek before your trip.

Greece Flag

You do see the Greece flag in almost every part of Athens.  You won't see them in numbers like you would the US flag here in the states, but they are present all over.  Surprisingly, you actually see more Greece flags on the islands like Corfu and other small sublets of the country.

For those who may not be aware... their flag looks like this:

Taste of Greece

I admit, this is one of my favorite things about the whole trip and no Athens review would be complete without mentioning the food.  The taste of Greece is one not to ever be forgotten.  I am often a somewhat picky eater...and I fell in love with the food in both Athens and in Corfu.  In Athens you can easily enjoy some of the best food ever while sitting on or next to the beach.  In Corfu, you escape to a small mountain road and eat at family-owned cafe sitting next to the crystal water as you look past the sea at the mountains in the distance.

Obviously, seafood is extremely easy to find.  You can enjoy fish that we don't have in the states, fresh fruits and vegetables grown right there on the island, and so much more!  Like I said, I fell in love with the food there.  Honestly, you should take a trip there for the food alone.  The huge bonus and what makes it even better is where you enjoy such wonderful meals and snacks.  In Athens you eat on the beach or in a fine sit down restaurant.  in Corfu, you eat on the beach or in a mountain cafe.  Of course, you can also enjoy your food at the ocean side cafes too.
