When it comes to a city break in Europe, many Traveller neglect Athens - but quite wrongly! The capital not only has a traditional history, but also a multitude of breathtaking attractions to offer. Of course, the tasty Greek cuisine and the vibrant nightlife should not be overlooked.

The best athens hotels are a great starting point to enjoy the exciting metropolis to the fullest and to explore the most impressive sights. The following article shows what these are.

The Cycladic village of Anafiotika

Those looking for the truly authentic Greek lifestyle can find it in the sweet and narrow streets of Anafiotika. Built in the style of a Cycladic village, this rocky town quarter is recognisable at first glance by its paths, some of which are paved with marble, and its white terrace-roofed houses.

The landmark: The Acropolis

If you walk up the hill across Anafiotika, you can't miss the Acropolis. It is Athens' most famous landmark and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The former city fortress has also been awarded the European Heritage Label.

The Plaka district

Also directly adjacent to Anafiotika and the Acropolis is the historic Plaka district. The area is therefore ideal for exploring on foot in a relaxed manner. Plaka is one of the oldest districts of the metropolis and forms an exciting contrast to the modern city centre. The charm of the district is added by the narrow stone streets and promenades, where you can taste local delicacies from the numerous restaurants and tavernas on offer. In most of them you can enjoy your meal outdoors. Much of Plaka is off-limits to motorised traffic, making for unhurried strolls through an exceptionally clean and well-maintained area. Within the district are historic mosques and a monument to Lysicrates from the 4th century BC.

Athens Street Art

Since Athens can look a little run-down in some corners beyond the modern centre, the locals hardly miss a chance to decorate the unsightly walls with street art. Murals can be found in almost all of Athens' older districts - Plaka, Monastiraki and Psirri are particularly full of impressive works of art.

Flea market in Monastiraki

Flea market fans will certainly get their money's worth in Athens. The flea market in Monastiraki is not to be missed. It is open every day, but only on Sundays does it turn into a bustling bazaar where the entire city seems to come to buy antiques, clothes, Greek pastries, artwork and souvenirs.

Greek Parliament and Changing of the Guard

Since Athens is also considered the cradle of democracy, a certain cultural programme is not to be missed. Therefore, a visit to Syntagma Square, which is bordered on its upper part by the Parliament building, is a must. The ceremonial changing of the guard is a special spectacle - the President of Greece's guard of honour is changed every hour.

The beaches near Athens

Although Athens does not have its own city beach, on hot days it is definitely worth the hour or so journey to one of the nearby beaches. The beaches of Porto Rafti, Saronida, Vari and Vouliagmeni are particularly popular.

The culinary highlights

Greece's cuisine is rightly considered one of the best in the world. Therefore, it is not to be missed to explore the Greek capital also from a culinary point of view. Particularly recommendable, for example, is the traditionally produced Greek coffee, which can be tasted in Athens' oldest café. In addition, Orea Hellas also serves typical Greek starters, which are ideal with wine, beer, raki and, of course, ouzo.
