Renowned for its exquisite French Creole architecture, evocative jazz bars, and unique cuisine, New Orleans is frequently named one of the world's most romantic towns. The history, jazz-loving culture, and potential for ghost hunting—made popular by Anne Rice's eerie tales—are what makes the city so appealing. Playing in a professional Dixieland band at Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition more than 40 years ago was how the author first got involved with NOLA.

Finding DTW flights to New Orleans that were both practical and reasonably priced, they also looked for a romantic escape away from the sun and beach. Rich history, a jazz-loving culture, and Anne Rice's eerie tales are what make the city so appealing. These are some of the top activities in the city for couples.

Take a Romantic Rail Ride

History buffs will find that traveling through time on New Orleans' vintage rail-guided trams is a unique experience. A must-see destination is the Garden District, which is distinguished by its clicketing wheels and streets covered by magnolia trees. With its alleys covered by magnolia trees and a seductive pulse provided by the clicketing wheels on the rails, the Garden District's charm is also apparent. A NORTA tram trip in New Orleans is a romantic experience for history buffs or anyone who enjoys traveling.

Have a Gumbo Taste

Gumbo, a specialty of New Orleans that gets its name from the West African word for okra, is a must-try food. The greatest gumbo, which is a dish inspired by French cooking, roux, and filé, is served at The Gumbo Shop in the French Quarter. At a political banquet in New Orleans in 1803, gumbo was first mentioned in writing. The "Holy Trinity" of Creole cooking—the roux, protein (chicken or andouille), celery, and bell pepper—are the main ingredients of the food. Locals love The Gumbo Shop, and the best part is the gumbo paired with a Hurricane, a strong beverage that screams New Orleans.

Sip a Hurricane

A friend of ours in New Orleans suggested we try Hurricanes, a popular beverage in the French Quarter. David McElveen, the barman at Bourbon Pub, poured us a refreshing Hurricane on a balcony with a view of Bourbon Street. A famous beverage in the French Quarter, hurricanes were created at O'Brien's during World War II when whisky was in short supply. The hurricane lamp-shaped glass that is offered in the tavern is the source of the name. Whichever source it comes from, the Bourbon Pub has Hurricanes, and a pair who shared with a partner made our date night even more romantic.

Enjoy the Nightlife and Music on Frenchmen's Street

For lovers of jazz, Frenchmen's Street in New Orleans is a must-see location. Situated just past the French Quarter, the street boasts seven distinct drinking establishments with live music. On Sundays, the predominant genre is jazz, however, blues and reggae are also offered. Hurricane and Sazerac cocktails are served to guests in a building that dates back two centuries. The city's top jazz club, Blue Nile, focuses mainly on ticketed concerts. For a drink, Bamboula's is a great walk-in location. The majority of bars have a one-drink minimum per person for every performance, but some have no seating at all, so patrons swarm in to cheer on the bands after each solo. A graphic representation of the city's jazz scene may be found on Google Maps.

Enjoy a Romantic Garden District Walk

With its antebellum houses, exquisite gardens, and peaceful walkways, New Orleans' Garden District is a fascinating neighborhood. With residences like those of John Goodman and Anne Rice, the French Quarter is a timeless trip through time. There are rumored to be two spirits that live in the neighborhood, Commander's Palace, a well-known restaurant. There are affordable flights from Detroit to New Orleans if you want to go to the city and see a range of attractions.
