Barcelona's historical, vast province has many municipalities with beautiful natural landscapes and stunning architecture that lure countless visitors worldwide. The elaborate Gothic architecture created by Antoni Gaudi is prevalent throughout Barcelona, enhancing this city's appeal. The buildings are frequently characterized as organic, whimsical, nonsensical--even Seussical. Yet, the iconic Cathedral of the Holy Cross, with its fairy-tale appearance, draws visitors worldwide.

The Basilica I Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia

Also known as the Basilica of the Sagrada Family, this church had its construction interrupted by the Spanish civil war. The Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed this church, and his architectural efforts on the building became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On November 7, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the Basilica of the Sagrada family that soars above the city's skyline as a minor basilica on November 7, 2020.

Barceloneta

An area of charming two-story houses, Barceloneta also has delicious and varied cuisine. Visitors can enjoy tapas and vermouth, paella, and seafood. Tourists can also see the glitzy yachts lining the inviting marinas, like the Port Olympic complex.

La Rambla

The straight, long road called La Rambla extends from Port Vell to Plaça de Catalunya at the center. Considered Barcelona's most famous street, La Rambla offers many shops, flower stands, artworks, and attractions. As it leads tourists near the sea, they should not miss the ornate Canaletes fountain, the Teatre Principal, Liceu opera house, and the Boqueria market.

The Picasso Museum

A favorite of tourists, the Picasso Museum was created by Pablo Ruiz Picasso himself, along with his secretary and friend, Jaime Sabartès. This museum has nearly 4,000 works. The permanent collection is located in the Hôtel Salé on the rue de Thorigny.

The Barcelona Cathedral

As an example of Gothic architecture, this cathedral is most impressive. Since 1929, it has been a National Historical Monument; it now honors the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, Barcelona's martyred patron saint, whose relics lie in the crypt. The abbey has worn engravings and a painting of white geese that symbolize the young saint's life each year. Visitors may witness another Catalan tradition, the Sardana dance, performed in the square of the cathedral on weekend mornings.

La Boqueria

As the market has become a primary tourist site, vendors have had to master how to describe their goods in various languages. There is an abundance of artisanal produce covering a 2,583 square meter area with 300 stalls.

Children especially will enjoy the 13 white geese, representative of Saint Eulalia's life. There are worn engravings on the floor, marking payments for each part of the chapel. And, if the children and parents visit on weekend mornings, they can observe the Sardana dance, another Catalan tradition performed in the cathedral square.

Park Güell

With endless colors and beauty surrounding the location, Park Güell is another stop in Barcelona that can't be missed. Get a gorgeous view of the architecture from the park, while also enjoying examples of Catalan Art Nouveau. One of the best parts of the park is its view of the greater city. This is a great place to stop for aspiring artists, as they will appreciate the level of work that went into the beauty of the park.

With its expansive history and beautiful architecture, Barcelona is a city in Spain that every traveler should visit in their lifetime. Before visiting, make sure to create a full travel itinerary, as this will help make it easier to plan multiple events and activities. Visiting Barcelona, Spain, will be a trip that one will never forget and should be included on any avid traveler's bucket list.
