A Roman Holiday: 5 Attractions for Time Restricted Tourists in Rome

Rome is often described as one of the most excellent open-air museums. Steeped in history and rich in atmosphere, walking through the eternal city is an experience unlike any other. Old buildings stand tall and proud, almost begging the visitor to explore their surroundings, but if you are short on time, fitting it all in can be challenging. Here is a Rome bucket list, so you don't miss anything in your once in a lifetime trip.

Tour of the Vatican

Whether you are religious or not, a tour of the Vatican should be at the top of your to-do list. Become fully immersed in art as you tour the fabulous grounds and admire statues, paintings, and tapestries that have a wealth of history attached to them.

A visit is not complete without visiting the Sistine Chapel, which can only be accessed through the Vatican museum, to gaze in wonder at the magnificent work of Michelangelo, and other artists, that grace the ceiling.

An Emotional Visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The tomb of the unknown soldier is worth a visiting while visiting this beautiful city.  Here you will find an entombed soldier in his final resting place and whose identity is unknown. Selected by the mother of a fallen soldier after the Great War, from several exhumed bodies, he represents those who did not return home. He gives a place for Italian families to grieve for their loss, and as you see the guarded eternal flame beside his tomb, you can't help but feel some kind of emotion.

The Magnificent Trevi Fountain

No visit to Rome is complete without taking in the stunning Trevi Fountain. Here you can snap some photographs to capture your memories or just simply admire the intricate detail of the fountain. Grab a slice of pizza or indulge in gelato from one of the many shops that surround the fountain and rest your feet as you take in the breathtaking view.

Be a Warrior in the Colosseum

A building that is famed the world over is something that everyone must visit when in Rome. Hear the tales of how gladiators came to be and how they could earn their freedom. Allow your imagination to run riot as you are shown what the Colosseum looked like in its heyday and find out a little more about the different classes in ancient Rome.

If you do want to see the basement, where they kept the Gladiators, this requires a separate ticket, which typically sells out months in advance, so book well before you go.

Beverly Hills of its Day - Roman Forum/Palatine Hill

Too many the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill can look like a pile of rubble, but take the time to invest in a tour guide for this one. You can find out the stories of the vestal virgins, the Roman gods that were worshipped before Catholicism made its mark and how the rich lived in this part of the world, thousands of year ago. Comfortable shoes are a must here as you will be walking over old and uneven ground as you learn more about how the Romans lived.

With so much to do and see in Rome, it can leave many tourist heads turning. Here you have the top five must-see attractions in Rome that will leave you gazing in awe and never wanting to leave this beautiful city.
