There is no better way to learn about the world, expand your horizons and make the most of your student years than by participating in an exchange program. Truthfully, any destination will give you experiences of a lifetime. However, if you are really aiming high, you might want to consider one of the countries of the vast continent of Asia as your target destination. Not only will it be a unique experience that will keep you in awe throughout your stay, but the high-level education they provide will give you a different kind of competence. So, here are some of the top choices for a semester abroad in an exotic place.

Thailand

This southeastern paradise with hubs such as Bangkok, Phuket, as well as the historical hotspot of Chiang Mai is an excellent choice for studies abroad. While Bangkok is a buzzing metropolis and an iconic city that will keep on giving, you might not expect Phuket to be an equally ideal exchange destination with one of the best universities in the country. Chiang Mai boasts notable institutions such as Chiang Mai University, Payap University and Maejo University, just to name a few. While you are definitely going to have to work hard, you will find the locals welcoming and the other students friendly towards exchange students, and you will form friendships—and perhaps even connections that will stand the test of time.

China

Considering that China is one of the leading economies of the 21st century, it becomes more and more evident that learning the language and getting acquainted with the country can only benefit someone with an ambition to build a great career. Thankfully, China is also welcoming exchange students—and in great numbers at that, with several hundreds of thousands of students choosing this vast country to experience a different world and obtain a quality education. Not only are the programs competitive but so are the prices, which can be a deal breaker for many people. So, if you have a knack for languages, try to learn some Chinese while you’re there because it might just come in handy in your professional life later!

India

It is a well-known fact that India is a hotspot of innovative tech advancements and a rapidly developing economy, which makes it an alluring destination for ambitious students. Besides the well-known cities of Hyderabad and, of course, New Delhi, there are other up-and-coming gems as well, such as the state of Kerala down in the south that not only has a thriving technology sector and a developed infrastructure but a blooming real estate scene and, of course, numerous educational institutes to choose from. Students flocking to this outstanding country will experience a colorful cultural scene and might also learn about eastern religions along the way. Another plus is that in India, you’ll do fine if you speak English, as all university degrees are taught in English.

Indonesia

While Indonesia might not be the first country that comes into mind when talking about foreign studies, you would be surprised what a great choice it actually is. The tropical climate and the delicious food combined with the amazing culture of these islands and the incredible diversity will charm everyone. If you like all things Indonesian, chances are you will be delighted to learn about local religions, customs, yoga, or study Bahasa Indonesian or Arabic, which are the two go-to languages students choose this country for. While Bali is a “surfers’ paradise” or “the Island of Gods” in most people’s eyes, it has universities such as Warmadewa University and even shorter summer exchange programs that are more than worth considering.

Malaysia

Nestled in the southeastern corner of the continent, besides being an acknowledged business hub, Malaysia is becoming a coveted spot for exchange students from all over the world. With a notable higher education system, a warm atmosphere and, we must not fail to mention, delicious food, choosing one of the top universities in Kuala Lumpur is an impeccable decision. Not to mention, the city was ranked the second most affordable student city in the world last year! English is also widely spoken which will make the transition smoother, so don’t be afraid of approaching the local students and making new acquaintances.

South Korea

If your ambitions are as high as the SKY, South Korea, and Seoul in particular, might be the right choice for your student exchange program. While aiming for the best of the best might be unattainable for most people, you will be delighted to learn that there are so many options, that you will actually have a hard time choosing. International universities such as Hankuk University of Foreign Studies offer both Bachelor’s and Master’s level education as well as intensive language courses that will enable you to better your Korean and communicate with the locals. The cheap but delicious street food and the immersive culture all around are only a bonus to their high-quality education system!

In Conclusion

If you’re coming from the western world, chances are you’re going to need some time to adjust to the cultural differences in an environment so far removed from yours. However, that is all part of the learning process and becoming culturally competent is something you will hardly achieve staying at home. In today’s connected world, embracing diversity should be a priority and you will certainly learn about that and grow as a person regardless of which of these destinations you might choose.
