The south coast has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for wildlife excursions, warm sandy beaches, or quiet coastal roads dotted with local cafes serving delectable and authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. Maybe you want to learn about the sacred Buddhist monasteries or the historic sites, or perhaps experience an adventurous safari drive to witness elephants and leopards!
Whatever your reason for travelling to Sri Lanka, one thing remains constant; you will find plenty here to keep you occupied for days!
MUST-DO things in the south coast of Sri Lanka
1. Relaxing day on the beach
This sounds like the most obvious thing one would do when they arrive at a tropical island. Yet with all the exciting activities you can do here, it's easy to get carried away. So, make a note of that, and carve out some time for yourself to simply lay on the golden sands and soak up the sun.
Tangalle beach is perfect for just that as it offers you vast stretches of sandy shorelines with tall green palms swaying in the salty breeze. Take a dip in the blue waters to cool off during the warm afternoon as you relax and unwind with a refreshing king coconut by your side.
2. Visit a sea turtle hatchery
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are home to a variety of species of sea turtles, of which the Green Turtle, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Leatherback and are known to frequent the shores of Sri Lanka, where the females lay their eggs along the coast in the same sands on which they were born. Although they lay hundreds of eggs, most baby turtles don't make it to adulthood and are hence considered endangered species.
Places such as the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery have embarked on an effort to conserve the eggs by providing a safe haven, away from predators, until they hatch. You can also hope to have a close look at the rescued turtles that have been injured by fishnets or other calamities.
3. Visit Yala National Park
Set out on a safari to Yala National Park, where you can observe wild elephants, leopards, sloth bears and a multitude of birds alongside a whole host of other creatures in their natural habitat. As the most famous national park in the country (and the second largest), Yala offers the most incredible diversity of the island's flora and fauna within its 12,600km² of land area.
4. Experience a delightful afternoon tea in the jungle
After your safari game drive, immerse yourself with a unique afternoon tea experience in the jungle during your stay at Wild Coast Tented Lodge Yala.
Perfectly curated by their expert team, you are brought to a specially selected serene spot by a river or waterhole within Yala, where you can stretch your legs as you enjoy the delectable afternoon tea. It allows you the opportunity to get up close to the rugged surroundings and even observe the traces of the animal footprints that are embedded into the landscape.
5. Shop for local crafts and souvenirs
Along the south coast, you can find a multitude of boutiques selling items that show off the intricate craftsmanship of the community. From batiks to hand woven accessories and homeware and ornaments made of wood carvings, there's much to feast your eyes if you're on the hunt for authentic Sri Lankan souvenirs.
