5 Must-Do's In Atlantis

AKA Paradise Island, Bahamas

Picture this: little 10 year old me, sitting on the couch watching “Atlantis Squarepantis” (aka the episode of Spongebob in which they visit Atlantis) dreaming about the moment I, too, could go to Atlantis. Well, that dream came true! In 2013, my family and I took a trip to Paradise Island, Bahamas, and stayed in the Atlantis resort. It has since been one of my favorite trips we have taken. Looking to plan a vacation on this beautiful island? Here are 5 must do’s while travelling to Atlantis, Paradise Island!

1. Take the Leap of Faith

You can’t visit Atlantis without taking a leap of faith. Literally. Check out the Leap of Faith waterslide, which plunges you 60 feet from the top at hair-raising speeds into a shark filled lagoon. (Don’t worry, it’s enclosed.) While you’re at it, don’t forget to take a ride down the 8 other water slides, or a dip in the many pools offered. There are plenty of kid friendly play areas, too.

2. Shop at the Nassau Straw Market

This traditional open-air market was a great way to spend the day! Home to many different handmade Bahamian crafts, souvenirs, and hand-woven straw hats, bags, mats, and dolls, which were all reasonably priced. Here, I picked up tons of adorable souvenirs for my friends and I, including bracelets, clothing items, and hair accessories. The fact that each piece is authentic and handmade made them a little more special.

3. Swim with Dolphins

Who wouldn’t want to spend an hour swimming with these beautiful creatures? This was the first time I had ever come in contact with a dolphin, and it is something I will never forget! We went to Dolphin Cay in Atlantis; our dolphin’s name was Atlas. We chose the deep water swim, which began with a brief orientation where we were provided wetsuits and discussed rules and procedures. We then took photos kissing, dancing, and standing with the dolphin. Next was the free swim, where we were each provided with underwater scooters which propelled us around the water. To end the experience, the dolphin pushed each of us across the water, followed by some tricks. Overall, it was such a fun experience, and something I recommend to everyone, of all ages!

4. Visit Marina Village

The Marina is a great place to shop, as well as a source of entertainment and plentiful dining options. With 20+ stores, including MAC, Pandora, and Pirana Joe, there is something offered for everyone. The Marina also houses 7 different restaurants as well as live entertainment. Whether you go to shop, or to admire all of the beautiful yachts docked, the Marina Village is definitely a place to check off your list of places to go!

5. Relax

It is called a vacation for a reason! While visiting different attractions and going to waterparks is fun, it is crucial to allow yourself some time for relaxation! The resort offers the Mandara Spa, where you could relax with a facial, massage, body treatments, or the salon. If spas aren’t your thing, head down to the beach! The white sand and crystal clear water is enough to get your relaxation on. With 5 miles making up three different beaches, visit each one and enjoy the view. This was one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been on, and the sunrise/sunset is quite the scene.

Paradise Island received its name for a reason, and everything about this place is worth it! I highly recommend investing in traveling to the Bahamas, whether it be at Atlantis or not. The islands are beautiful and make for an unforgettable vacation.
