If you’re planning this year’s summer trip or you fancy a last-minute getaway, camping is an affordable, fun and adventurous option that’s perfect for all kinds of holidaymakers. The great outdoors has so much to offer: you don’t need to pack 101 items to stay entertained. There is plenty of outdoor fun for adults and kids to enjoy!

Whether you’re exploring the incredible Lake District from the comfort of your campervan or you’ve set up camp in the cosy Welsh valleys, there are tons of exciting activities to get stuck into from your campsite and beyond.

In this blog, we discuss 5 fun activities you can add to your camping itinerary. Read on to learn more.

1. Explore the Area on a Hike

Hiking is a great way of exploring local landmarks and getting some exercise into your trip. Most campsites have nearby trails or walking paths you can check out before you arrive, including more leisurely hikes that are suitable for families, as well as challenging trails for those seeking adventure!

Be sure to pack a good pair of hiking boots and, of course, good waterproof clothing as British weather can be unpredictable.! Once you get to the peak of your hike, you can sit back and admire the incredible views with a spot of lunch: you’ll be sure to have a fantastic night’s sleep after all that fresh air.

2. Make Campfire Treats

You can’t go camping without some traditional campfire snacks like smores. Of course, always double-check the fire restriction on the campsite beforehand and if you’re good to go, stock up on all of your ingredients. Simple smores can be made by layering biscuits, marshmallows and chocolate for a few minutes until melted —this is a particularly popular activity with little ones!

Alternatively, roasting marshmallows is the perfect evening activity that will get you in true camping spirit. It doesn’t get much better than tucking into campfire treats with your family and friends.

3. Enjoy a Bird-Watching Session

Most campsites have nearby nature reserves or fantastic spots for seeing a whole range of wildlife, including birds. Even if you haven’t tried bird watching before, camping is a great opportunity to give it a go and immerse yourself in nature. If you’re lucky, you might even get a glimpse of our most rare feathered friends: hawfinch, nightingale, and even a red kite.

Like anything else, the better your equipment, the more enjoyable and productive your experience will be. With that in mind, it’s always worth investing in weatherproof binoculars. You’ll want a pair of binoculars with a durable design, one that you can use for many camping trips to come. And with weather-resistant lenses, you’ll be covered in all weather conditions throughout the year.

4. Try Wild Swimming

If you’re an early bird, then waking up and heading for a morning dip could be the perfect start to your day while camping. Nature’s swimming pools are dotted all over the UK, taking the form of crystal clear lakes, rivers and even waterfalls. These spots allow you to enjoy a few leisurely hours soaking up the scenery.

There are plenty of waterside campsites with wild swimming spots right on your doorstep. Outdoor swimming can feel like a real adventure as you climb over rocks or walk through the forest to find a hidden lake. It's a pretty magical experience!

5. Give Geocaching a Go

Geocaching is an activity that’s done by millions of people internationally. For those who are planning a camping trip, geocaching is a brilliant way of exploring a new area and having fun as you look for hidden items. Simply download a geocaching app and off you go!

With different difficulty levels, you can choose a hunt that’s suited to your group, whether you’re up for a challenge or would like a more family-friendly adventure. Geocaching is great for young children who will quickly be invested in finding each cache, checking it off and even discovering the hidden treasures that were left by the previous person.

Why not enhance your camping experience by incorporating some of these activities into your next trip? Trying something new while enjoying the great outdoors will only make your trip even more memorable! Find a fantastic campsite, plan your activities and you’ll have the best trip whether you’re camping solo, with friends or family.
