Air powered vehicle is a compressed air vehicle that uses compressed air for impulsion. It is an eco-friendly vehicle, which uses air as a fuel and works on the principle of Compressed Air Technology (CAT). These vehicles utilize the expansion of compressed air to drive the pistons of an engine. The engine employed in an air-powered vehicle is called an air driven engine, which is the air-filled actuator that creates useful work by expanding compressed air. There is no mixing of fuel with air, subsequently, there is no combustion in an air powered vehicle.

Low speed of the air powered vehicle coupled with limited infrastructure for refuelling is a major factor that is likely to delay the air powered vehicle market during the forecast period. Furthermore, a rise in acceptance of electric vehicles, owing to emission concerns and government subsidies and incentives being offered on a purchase on electric vehicles, is another factor that is projected to hamper the air powered vehicle market during the forecast period.

Tata Motors had signed a license agreement with the France-based Motor Development International (MDI) to produce and sell compressed air cars using MDI technology in India as well as further refine the technology.

Tata Motors is aggressively making moves at developing environment-friendly vehicles across passenger segments. The company revealed a raft of public transportation products – electric, hybrid, fuel cell, and LNG – at its Pune plant, all of them showcasing the manufacturer’s focus on smart and green technology and new mobility solutions.

For now, the concept has been only tested in two of Tata motor vehicles and now both Tata and MDI are working on the development of the technology and technical processes which would help to industrialize a market-ready product. So that it will take at least a couple of years before we hear anything important about the launch of the product in the Indian market.

MDI, the company behind the AirPod claims the product price to be around US$ 10,000 which would translate to anywhere between Rs. 5-6 lakhs in India, thus making it a very feasible option for the Indians who are already struggling to come to terms with the increasing prices of fuel in India. Hence if Tata is able to pull off this one, it would come as a huge relief for the Indians.

The technology however still needs a lot of work. American company Zero Pollution Motors has purchased the technology and aims to introduce it in the American market. It is a prospect that is still warming up towards the idea of green technology, but with the right push via government regulations, it will be possible.

Key players operating in the market include Motor Development International SA, Tata Motors, Magnetic Air Car, Inc., Engineair Pty Ltd, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and Groupe PSA.
