The metal fabrication industry uses power press machines in large quantities to make cuts, bends, punch holes and create edges from sheet metal with a high degree of precision. If you have a power press, there are many potential operational problems you could encounter. Power presses are usually extremely reliable, durable, and effective machines. In addition, know how to fix your power press will also reduce the amount of downtime caused by operational problems, as well as extend the overall lifespan of your power press or other equipment in your facility.

1. Misalignment of Die and Punch

Misalignment between the die and punch is a common issue affecting power press machines, resulting in defective product output, uneven cuts, excessive burrs and potential damage to the expensive tool components themselves. The problem is often due to improper machine setup; wear and tear of components; or not performing regular inspections. Properly aligning the die and punch prior to beginning production run is critical, so routine checking and aligning of the components are fundamental items that should be performed before production starts. Proper tools & gauges should always be used to ensure accurate alignment, while also having the assistance of experienced operators during setup to reduce the potential for mistakes. Additionally, by calibration on a periodic basis, the machine maintains its ability to produce accurate product parts and improve both the quality of the produced parts as well as extend the useful life of both the machine and the tool.

2. Excessive Vibration and Noise

Indicators of mechanical problems below the surface of a power press are the presence of unusual vibration and/or noise during operation. These could include loose parts or worn bearings, or an unbalanced condition within the assembly. Without oversight, these conditions could be caused by a loss of machining precision (which may also lead to premature failure) and or a premature breakdown of your machines, which is often extremely costly. Therefore, part of a good preventative maintenance program includes carrying out an appropriate amount of clearance checks, then tightening all of the bolts/nuts/fasteners, and checking to see that the clearances remain within the manufacturer's specifications (in order to maintain the durability of your machine).

In addition, to help promote the longevity of all moving parts, worn or damaged bearings should be replaced immediately, and sufficient lubrication must be applied to all moving parts in order to reduce the amount of friction between drops. The proper installation of the machine to a heavy, solid footing will also help reduce the vibration of your machine (resulting in a smoother operating machine), and therefore improve the production of the machine, overall.

3. Overheating of the Machine

Excessive of power press machines can cause Overheat it and due to inadequate cooling, it might affect the efficiency of machines. Avoid overuse of power press machines and ensure only optimal time period power press machines are used. Therefore, do not overload the press and pay attention to your manufacturer’s operating cycle instructions. Making use of coolant and lubrication system for cooling the heating effect of power press machines can help us to maintain the temperature and proper functioning of power press machines.

4. Poor Cutting or Punching Quality

When metal parts produced by a mechanical press have rough edges or have burrs or incomplete cuts, there is a good chance that there are issues with either the condition of the tooling or the machine settings. Power press machines have hydraulic and mechanical press options which is capable of performing forging tasks efficiently.

5. Lubrication Issues

Not lubricating and improperly lubricating power press machines can create excessive friction between their moving parts, which results in accelerated wear, overheating and a marked decrease in the machines' overall efficiency.

6. Electrical Failures

Electricity powers most presses and is needed for them to work continuously. With almost everything about machines having electrical connections, if anything goes wrong such as loose wires, blown fuses, or bad motors, the machine can stop running suddenly and cause production delays. Electrical issues can cause current flows in various parts of power press. This can cause electric shock hence proper insulation must be used by Power press machine manufacturer. Anything that requires electrical repair or maintenance shall be done by qualified technicians, both to ensure proper operation of the electrical systems and to comply with current safety regulations and applicable codes of practice.

7. Clutch and Brake Problems

The operator of a power press machine may be in danger because of a faulty clutch or brake system, resulting in an increased risk of accidents as well as an uncontrolled operation of the machine. Operators could also notice that the machine is not performing to its full capabilities, which can lead to other types of issues. There are many different things that can make this happen: for instance, misalignment, wear & tear, improper adjustments of the components involved and not having the proper maintenance schedule are all reasons why the clutch/brake mechanisms may not be working properly. Operations can conduct inspections of the clutch/brake components regularly to avoid having safety issues or experiencing downtime due to mechanical failures with the machines. When inspecting the components, if they have been damaged (i.e., if they have lost their lubricating properties), they must be replaced immediately, and additional adjustments need to be made so that the maximum stopping time/maximum performance is being achieved through proper stops and maximum control over the machine. If the clutch/brake components are regularly serviced and the manufacturer's recommended preventive maintenance schedule is adhered to, the operators will find improved operator safety and that the total overall performance of the machine has improved both in terms of efficiency and reliability.

8. Material Feeding Issues

Improper feeding of material is one of the most common causes for problems encountered when using the power press. Problems caused by improperly feeding the material can be jams, inconsistent part quality, and unnecessary machine downtime due to production delays. Common causes of improper feed include misalignment of the feed system, variation in size of the material (mixed) or operator failure to watch the feed point when handling the material. Properly aligning and calibrating the feed system to the specification of the machine will solve this problem. In most instances where automated feeders are used, the consistency of feeding and thus operator error will be reduced significantly; this is especially true in high volume manufacturing. Proper training of operators with regard to materials handling techniques and repeated inspections of the feeding mechanism will help maintain the material flow through the machine (process) and therefore improve the overall efficiency of the machine.

Conclusion

Power press machines are a vital component of any manufacturing facility, just like all industrial machines they also need to be maintained regularly, and addressed as soon as they occur. Manufacturers must be able to identify common issues with respect to power press machines, such as misalignment, overheating, poor lubrication, and electrical failures, and resolve them with proper solutions in order to optimize productivity, safety, and extend their life. The key to maximum operational efficiency from power press machines is to invest in both preventative maintenance and training of the person that runs the machine.
