Borrow Under 5%, Earn Over 100%: The Closed-Loop LUNA-WBTC Strategy
Erisprotocol Defi LUNA-WBTC
Earning triple-digit APR sounds aggressive. Most people assume high risk. The truth is you can engineer a spread using cheap borrowed money. The method works. You just need to connect two existing DeFi rails. This article details the stepwise play using any major lending market and Terra’s Liquidity Alliance via Eris Protocol.
The core idea. Borrow stablecoins or other assets at less than 5% APR. Convert to LUNA and WBTC. Provide liquidity on Eris. Stake the LP tokens. Earn from the Alliance’s incentive gauge. The net spread stays comfortably above 60%, often hitting 100% when pool emissions are elevated. Your cost of capital stays low. The mechanics hold up when executed with discipline.
Where to Get Loans Below 5%
Several protocols offer cheap borrowing. On Ethereum mainnet, Aave v3 often lists USDC borrow rates around 2-4% depending on utilization. Compound Finance provides similar. On Arbitrum, Radiant Capital sometimes shows USDT rates under 3%. You lend collateral, borrow stables, and pay interest over time. The loan is overcollateralized so liquidation risk is managed.
Pick a chain where you hold idle assets. Deposit ETH or stables as collateral. Borrow at the target rate. Then bridge the borrowed funds to Terra. Wormhole handles stablecoin transfers smoothly. Once on Terra, swap stables for LUNA and some for WBTC. Split according to the pool’s ratio (close to 50/50). Connect to Eris Protocol, add liquidity, and receive ERIS LP tokens.
The 100% APR Sources
Eris Protocol aggregates incentives from the Terra Liquidity Alliance. For the LUNA-WBTC pool, rewards come from multiple streams. ERIS token emissions, additional partner tokens, and swap fees. The Alliance applies a gauge weight that shifts based on veERIS votes. When your community votes heavily, the pool’s APR jumps. That’s how 100% becomes reachable consistently.
The borrowed stablecoins cost you maybe 4% per year. If the pool delivers 104% APR, your net gain is 100%. But you must monitor borrowing rates; they can fluctuate. Lock in a fixed rate via protocols like Notional (on Ethereum) if you want certainty. The borrowing cost might become 4.5% fixed. Still plenty of margin.
Step-by-Step Execution
Collateralize and Borrow: Deposit ETH on Aave. Borrow USDC at 3.8%.
Bridge: Send USDC to Terra via Wormhole Portal Bridge.
Swap: Convert half to LUNA, half to WBTC (through Astroport).
Provide Liquidity: On Eris, add to the LUNA-WBTC pool. Confirm LP tokens.
Stake and Vote: Stake LP tokens in the Eris gauge. Lock some ERIS for voting power, directing rewards to your own pool.
Reinvest: Regularly harvest rewards. Compounding accelerates earnings.
Managing Risks Intelligently
When LUNA or WBTC prices diverge sharply, the LP value can dip. However, the high yield typically compensates. Historical data from similar volatility pairs shows that after six months, fee and reward income exceeded any IL. Keep your time horizon at least three months.
Liquidation risk on the borrowing side. Monitor your collateral health factor. Keep it above 2.0. Automate with DeFi Saver or a simple alert. The loan amount stays modest relative to your collateral, say 30% LTV. Price swings then won’t trigger liquidation quickly.
Amplifying via Loop
Some farmers lever up further. They take the LP tokens, deposit them as collateral on a protocol that accepts them, borrow more stables, and add again. Right now, no Terra native money market accepts ERIS LP tokens as collateral. But the new Creda Finance might introduce such a feature soon. Until then, maintain a single loop from external borrowing. Keep it clean.
Actual Numbers Example
Deposit $10k ETH. Borrow $5k USDC. Bridge. Swap to $2.5k LUNA, $2.5k WBTC. Provide LP. The pool’s APR sits at 98% weighted. You earn about $4,900 per year in rewards. Subtract borrowing cost $190. Net yield $4,710, or 94% on your original deployment (you only deployed $5k of borrowed funds, plus collateral earning perhaps 1% on Aave). On the borrowed capital alone, the net APR is around 94%. That’s the power of the spread.
The community dimension: if your group collectively borrows and votes, the APR climbs, and everyone’s spread widens. A coordinated borrowing campaign lowers the effective cost for all because the pool gets stickier liquidity.
The play isn’t magic. It’s arithmetic. Borrow cheap, deploy where incentives are hottest, and vote to keep them hot. That’s the simple recipe. Your community can adopt it as a treasury tactic or share it with members. Either way, the spread sits there waiting.
