Why Do Good People Vote For Trump?

Specifically, Catholics.

I know some good people. Catholic people, devoted to God and Jesus. Always offering a hand to help, kind, generous.

They voted for Trump, in 2016 and now.

I can't wrap my mind around it. I was raised Christian, so I know Christian values. It's taking care of the poor and weak, equality, compassion, justice, peace. None of that resonates with Trump. He mocks disabled people, has yet to come up with a healthcare plan, is rude to women, doesn't care about climate change, and the list goes on.

I visited the Catholics for Trump website out of interest. I wanted to find the answer to why people who follow the word of God could vote for someone so mean, disrespectful, and selfish. On the very front page, it is stated that "Re-electing President Trump will ensure continued victories in pro-life issues, judicial appointments, and religious freedom."

Wow. Well, there it is. So…basically…. only things you care about. How holy of you!

It's amazing how one can form opinions about the world in such a selfish manner. Imagine voting for a president for only reasons that affect you? #cantrelate. Imagine not thinking about minorities, climate change, immigration, racism, sexism, none of that. Only yourself and what matters to you. You and your religion, the center point of the world.

What about climate change? You know, that little thing about saving the planet your God created? What about children separated from their families at the border? Oh, I forgot. You only care about American children in American wombs.

I want to know what on earth is the point of saving unborn children and at the same time voting for someone who doesn't give a crap about destroying the planet for future generations to come.

I was genuinely curious, so I asked. Why do you vote for him? The response was: "He is the first American President to speak at the pro-life march."

Interesting reason to vote for a president, as abortion is an issue but surely not the only one a president is responsible for. What about other big issues, climate change for example? Are you concerned about it, about the fact that during his presidency he has eliminated150 environment measures and expanded Arctic drilling? What about all the research scientists have done, about what a second Trump term might result in? "No no, China needs to fix itself first. America is not in charge of stopping climate change." Right. So just because the president is American, it doesn't mean he should care for anyone else except America. Who cares about global warming!? As long as the American Economy is blooming and women don't abort babies, all is well in the world!

Or maybe they are still hung on that tweet in which Trump claimed that "the concept of Global Warming was created by and for the Chinese to make manufacturing non-competitive?" If so, I've lost all hope.

Onto the next. What about his disrespectful behavior towards women? Respecting one another is a central part of Catholicism, isn't it? "He just has a loud mouth and a big ego."

Right. What about his tax returns, does that not bother you? "No, the media lied about it. The media is just against him."

You just can't win. How can you say you care about family values if you only care about American family values, not Mexican family values as they are separated from each other at the border? How can you say you honor life and eat meat at the same time? How can you go to church on Sundays and pray for the poor when you go out and vote for a president who paid no income taxes in ten of the preceding fifteen years? HOW.

I wish I could understand.

PS. Side-note: I have nothing against any religion, only hypocrisy. And there is much good in Catholicism and in the work they do. I'm only speaking about political decisions here!
