What are you so afraid of?

A letter to our leaders

Dear Leaders,

The world is on fire. The oceans are filled with trash. We have lakes filled with toxic waste and air filled with pollution.

So why are you not doing anything? Why are you not making noise or standing up?

What are you so afraid of?

Are you afraid to admit that you are wrong? That you have since learned that things are worse now then they were. That you spent more time with scientists and you have since changed your mind. Have you been to some of these sites and seen with your own eyes the damage we are doing to our own earth and you do not want to tell the world that you are wrong? It can take a lot of courage to do admit you made a mistake but our world is dying with your ignorance.

Are you a republican and afraid of losing your job? You can stand up for what you believe in an change the narrative. You can show how the two-party system is already flawed by standing up for climate change. You can be the leader who is strong enough to encourage other leaders to change their minds. The parties’ values have shifted before they can do it again. Climate change is bigger than a party value it is a human value. Without the earth we are nothing. We cease to exist, this is bigger than reelection. This is our home.

Are you afraid of causing panic? Well, there should be a little panic. We only have one earth to call home, but if we admit there is a problem then we can put more energy into finding a solution. There will be more encouragement for cooperation and collaboration making the process for finding a solution easier. This is time-sensitive, the longer we wait the worse it gets and the more damage we cause that can be irreversible. This is our home, the only one we have and we should be afraid to lose it.

Are you afraid that there will not be enough seats or room on Musk’s Mars Colony? Well here is the thing, we are dependent on the earth for all of its resources. Right now we do have a hundred percent reusable environment control and life support system, in basic terms the processes that keeps us alive. There is always some loss. We have been unable to recycle water one hundred percent meaning that even on the moon or mar we will still be dependent on the earth for water to live. Furthermore, we need the Earth’s Magnetic Field to protect us from the sun’s harmful radiation and we have yet to engineer an alternative form to protect us from that yet either. The point is you can’t abandon the earth so easily and if you bring the same human attitudes to another celestial object it will only be a matter of time before we destroy that one too.

We need to do something now. You need to make a stand now. It may be scary but it will be worth it way more than taking the easy way out. This is your home too. You have also seen its beauty, witness its destruction, seen its power and its value. If you still have doubts go to a dark sky park and peer up and see how small and insignificant we are in the vastness of space. See what we would be exposed to if our atmosphere ever failed. That in itself is a terrifying thought.

Please do something, for yourself, your children, for future generations and our home planet.
