A Letter to Donald Trump

Dear Mr. Trump,

These last four years have been... an experience, to say the least. I'm not really sure how else to describe it. From your election in 2016 until your departure this year, you have both entertained and shamed us. You brought out the best and the worst in our country. You stoked the flames of people's hatred. You rekindled our determination to love. Your supporters loved you emphatically. And those who opposed you did so with an earnestness to end all of the trouble you sowed wherever you went and whatever you laid your little hands or nonsensical words on. You both united and divided us.

You had the most scandals, slip-ups, and slander. You had more impeachments than any president before you. You were the worst president in our nation's history. Period. You win that award. Take it. Take it and go. Good riddance. Hopefully that satisfies your massive ego and thirst for popularity.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure how you lasted four years. I'm not sure how everyone saw these scandals happening one after another and decided to just shrug it off. I'm not sure how you did that yourself. Or how you avoided impeachment with everything you've done and said that has disgraced the American people. Your reign has been self-serving and laced with negativity. You incited some riots and quelled others that were supported by your enemies quickly and violently for your own personal gain.

You campaigned on a platform of racism and America-first politics. You wanted to "make America great again". We haven't been great for some time. Maybe we haven’t ever been great. Maybe a country being "great" is an illusion of factors seen to the outside world. Once you're inside the heart of America, you see that we are just the same as everyone else. What makes us unique is our diversity coupled with our democracy. Why would you want to take that identity away from us?

I won't speak on many of the issues and scandals raised during your presidency—I'm sure the entire world has heard of your transgressions by now. Nor do I speak for everyone with my next statement. But, for most, the storming of the capital on January 6 this year was the straw that broke the camel's back. You escaped impeachment last time by the skin of your teeth. As your last grip on reality and sanity has faded, luck is not on your side. I'm not sure most of your own party would even stand up against your impeachment and, therefore, the loss of any future chance of you running using their name in vain.

But, despite all of your bad, you made us recognize that maybe the future could be brighter. Maybe we can learn to put aside our differences. You were the tragedy we needed to make us realize how necessary change would become—how necessary it HAS been for quite some time. If people like you could be head of the "greatest" country in the world, where does that leave us? You brought about an epiphany: We are worse than we ever imagined, but have the potential to be better than we ever believed.

You confirmed our fears. That the system is flawed. What happens next is up to us. So, goodbye, Donald Trump, and thank you. Not for your presidency —hopefully your impeachment is successful and we can avoid future debacles like the past four years in American politics. But for your lessons. America will be greater for having had you as its worst president to date. One can only hope that we can learn from our mistakes.

Sincerely,

An idealistic voice.
