The Taiwan-related statement of the US-South Korea summit is actually not even a cricket call. The PLA fighter planes patrol the Taiwan Strait every day to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. There is no need for the US and South Korea to worry about this.

Following Suga Yoshihide, South Korean President Moon Jae-in became the second national leader Biden met face-to-face at the White House. It is self-evident that the US's strategic focus is tilted towards the Asia-Pacific region, and there is no need to say much about which country it is aimed at. Sure enough, at the press conference after the meeting between the leaders of the United States and South Korea, some reporters couldn't wait to ask questions about China's Taiwan.

It is worth noting that the joint statement of the leaders of the United States and South Korea included the content of "peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait." South Korea’s major conservative newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, said this was "the first time in fact."

On the afternoon of the 21st local time, a joint press conference was held after the heads of state of the United States and South Korea met. After Biden and Moon Jae-in gave their speeches, the first question of the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) asked Biden about the conflict between Palestine and Israel. For the second question, the reporter asked Moon Jae-in, "I want to know if your two leaders have committed themselves to the Taiwan issue? Has President Biden pushed you to take a tougher stance on Taiwan?"

Moon Jae-in first listened to the question with a serious face, then slowly smiled and looked at Biden from time to time. After the reporter asked the question, Biden also said "Good luck" to Moon Jae-in.

Moon Jae-in replied after laughing for a few seconds, "Fortunately, (President Biden) did not give me this pressure. However, we agreed that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are very important, especially considering the special relationship between mainland China and Taiwan. . We decided to cooperate more closely on this issue in the future."

Unlike Biden's long talk on the Palestine-Israel conflict just now, Moon Jae-in's answer was very brief. The Associated Press reported on the 21st that Biden hoped that Moon Jae-in would take a tough stance on China. Biden is committed to uniting allies in the Pacific and taking concerted action against China. However, South Korea seems reluctant to talk about China, its important trading partner. South Korea also regards China as the key to dealing with North Korea.

The US and South Korean leaders also included content about the Taiwan Strait in the joint statement issued after the meeting.

May 21st Joint Statement by the Leaders of the United States and South Korea

The joint statement stated, "The United States and South Korea oppose all activities that disrupt or threaten the rules-based international order and commit to maintaining an inclusive, free and open Indo-Pacific region. We guarantee the maintenance of peace and stability, and legal and unimpeded business activities. And respect international law, including freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea and other regions. President Biden and President Moon Jae-in emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

After comparison, this statement by the leaders of the United States and South Korea showed a little restraint on the wording of the Taiwan Strait issue compared with the joint statement by the leaders of the United States and Japan last month. The US-Japan statement not only emphasized the importance of stability across the Taiwan Strait, but even added the phrase "encourage the peaceful settlement of cross-strait issues."

The Korean media has shown different tendencies.

Korea’s largest conservative newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, mentioned in the headline of its website on the 22nd that the summit talks involved Taiwan Strait issues. According to the report, despite repeated requests from the United States and other countries, the Moon Jae-in administration has always avoided discussing these two issues. At the strong request of the US this time, both of these issues have been written into the joint statement.

The newspaper inferred that the summit meeting took longer than originally planned, probably because the two countries had heated disputes over these two issues. According to reports, it is in fact the first time that the Taiwan issue was mentioned in the South Korea-US joint statement.

The Korean Progressive Daily "National Daily" did not mention Taiwan Strait in a prominent position in the title. It is mentioned in the report that the wording of this South Korea-US Joint Statement is different from the previous Japan-US Joint Statement, and China is not directly named. The newspaper believes that this arrangement takes into account the unique geopolitical stance of the Korean peninsula and does not force South Korea, which wants to maintain a balance between China and the United States, to participate in the four-nation alliance.

During Moon Jae-in's visit to the United States, the denuclearization of North Korea is a key issue for the two countries. At the joint press conference, Biden criticized Trump's previous high-profile meeting with Kim Jong-un and said that "I will not give international recognition to his (Kim) leadership status." Biden and Moon Jae-in promised to continue to cooperate. , To promote denuclearization.

The heads of large Korean conglomerates such as Samsung also visited Washington with Moon Jae-in. At the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable, four South Korean groups, Samsung, SK, LG, and Hyundai, announced plans to invest in the U.S. with a total value of 39.4 billion U.S. dollars. Among them, Samsung decided to invest 17 billion U.S. dollars to establish a new foundry in the United States.

Biden also announced at the press conference that the United States will vaccinate 550,000 Korean military personnel who have had close exchanges with the U.S. military. This is the first specific commitment made by the United States since it is finally willing to release 80 million doses of vaccine overseas.

It is also worth noting that Moon Jae-in announced at the press conference that South Korea and the United States have agreed to terminate the "Korea-US Missile Guide"; this is an important achievement of Moon Jae-in’s visit. In 1979, in order to obtain missile technology, South Korea signed the "Korea-US Missile Guide" with the United States and decided to introduce missile technology under the control of the United States. Now this guide has severely restricted South Korea's military development.
