To Donald Trump

So I want to start by saying that I don’t think that anyone could possibly say that the many things Trump has accomplished during his time as president were anything less than miraculous.

Looking in, from a small oilfield town in northern Canada, I sit back with my mug in hand to take a moment to recollect the past 4 years. And the events that transpired after the election in 2016. I think I can speak for many foreigners who saw everything leading up to the election when I say that Trump did not look like the shoo-in candidate. All over the world people tuned out the US election because how could someone like Trump even win? But by golly, he was elected the first-ever reality star president, by a landslide 2.8 million votes… for Hillary Clinton. And yet, Trump still prevailed in electoral votes to become the president.

President Trump’s reign of power did not go unnoticed to the rest of the world outside of the United States. People on every continent, and in every country, will remember President Trump.

Donald Trump, as president, was a change-maker. He lived his duty of informing the American people and could very well be considered to have the most active Twitter of any sitting president. He leveraged his status as a celebrity and billionaire to influence and persuade on a mass scale. So much so, I even know more than a few Trump supporters here in Canada. A few of my neighbours even talked about moving to the US. I bet you’re wondering if this came as a surprise to me? Not really honestly. I think many people, even in places outside of the United States, were moved by Trump’s messages and words.

So it really seems fitting to award Trump with the title as the most moving President in US history.

If you are readying through this letter, then you probably already know of the many historic firsts and achievements carried out during Trump’s presidency. He was the fifth president to be elected with having not won the popular vote. He was the oldest president to take office. Pulled out of climate initiatives and approved pipelines, all in the name of improving the economy. Constructed a mighty fence on the mexican border. Separated families at said border. Poorly handled Coronavirus, leading to many deaths and more cases than could be handled. Took many state governments to court over voter fraud allegations. Refused to concede in the 2020 election. Insighted a riot at the capitol where, for the first time since 1814, the capitol was breached and occupied. He was removed from all social media platforms. And the only president to be impeached twice.

And this is all only a small portion of what Donald Trump has accomplished in office. Not listed are many games of golf, hours spent pining over the news, and time spend in blatant disregard for American’s and their families.

Donald Trump was a truly moving president. But his influential status also caused a fault to be exposed in more than just the United States. He helped to further divide the country, communities, and families. He proved to the world the effect of choosing to be ignorant not to see and understand the people around us. The real crazy thing is that even with all of the horrible actions taken by Trump and his administration, all of the bad already existed before Trump took office. Sure he may have dumped gasoline on the fire, but the fire was still burning your house down.

Now, with Trump leaving office, the bad will not be extinguished with him. It will take time and a lot of conscious effort by people who care to transform their communities, themselves, and the people around them. The issue was never Donald Trump, the issue was the inherent fact that much of our current world and political climate was build off of the back of an old past riddled with division and hatred.

So I close this off by saying, thank you Donald Trump. Thank you for bringing to light the painful truth and history of your country and mine. So from now on every time you think of Donald Trump, you will not remember him for the pain he caused, but you will remember why you choose to do better, to love your neighbors, and genuinely seek to understand the role you play.
