The Bigger Picture Behind Marine Pollution

How much are we polluting, and how will it affect our future?

Marine pollution occurs when chemicals, particles, industrial waste, agricultural waste, residential waste, noise, or invasive organisms enter into and harm the ocean ecosystem. Each year, billions of pounds of trash and other pollutants enter the ocean. Some pollutants come from a single, known source, like an oil spill. In other cases, the pollution is caused by an overabundance of a natural organism, like an algae bloom. Even sound can cause pollution—busy areas with lots of shipping traffic are unnaturally noisy, which harms the marine ecosystem. But most marine pollution comes from many smaller, dispersed sources, like septic tanks, cars, trucks, boats, trash, or farming.

In recent years, marine pollution has gained international attention as a major issue associated with climate change. Bentham Science has published a new book series, Marine Ecology: Current and Future Developments, which aims to bring fresh perspectives on the subject of marine environments and their role in driving sustainability around the world. Besides providing food, transportation, and lifestyle resources, the oceans serve as a vast sink to absorb increases in global heat, mitigating, at least temporarily, more extreme changes in global climate.

Marine Pollution: Current Status, Impacts and Remedies, edited by De-Sheng Pei and Muhammad Junaid, is the first book in the series and it explores marine pollution and why it is a cause for concern. The book goes into detail about methods to assess pollution, methods to identify, measure, and remediate various pollutants, and describes the list of known pollutants and their management. The work reminds the reader about how widespread the problems caused by marine pollution are and that intense international effort is required to resolve the problems.

This book will prove to be a useful resource for students, researchers, and policymakers who are working on the management and protection of the world's valuable marine resources and environment. Oceans are a vast but fragile resource that must be protected if we want to protect our livelihoods and the planet’s future.

About The Editors:

Desheng Pei, Professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences, currently leads the Research Center for Environment and Health (RCEH) at Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology (CIGIT).

Dr. Pei earned his Ph.D. from Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2003. Dr. Pei initially studied the mechanisms of DNA damage and repair. He has worked as a research fellow at Northeastern University (U.S.A) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School (U.S.A) to study on the mechanism of carcinogenesis of neuroblastoma. His work has been published in more than 80 journals, including PLOS Genetics, Nucleic Acids Research, Cancer Cell, Biomaterials, and Environmental Pollution. His current research interests mainly focus on studying toxicological effects, mechanisms and ecological risk assessment of classic environmental pollutants. He is endeavouring to develop real-time biological monitoring technologies for pollutants and explore the pathogenic mechanisms and carcinogenesis.

Muhammad Junaid earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), Beijing in 2018. Currently, He is working as a Research Fellow at the School of Environment and Energy, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Shenzhen, China. Dr. Junaid's research work is focused on understanding the ecological risks and toxicogenetic impacts of emerging and legacy organic and inorganic pollutants in the aquatic environment, model organisms and human cell lines. His work has been published in Environmental Pollution, Science of the Total Environment, Chemosphere, Aquatic Toxicology, Biomaterials and the Journal of Hazardous Materials.
