At least nine people were killed and more than two dozen injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, caused significant damage across several districts of the city, destroyed residential buildings, and triggered multiple fires. Emergency crews continued search-and-rescue operations throughout the day as authorities assessed the full extent of the destruction.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that explosions were heard across the capital shortly after air raid sirens sounded. Residents rushed to shelters as ballistic missiles and drones targeted various parts of the city. Ukrainian emergency services said that several apartment buildings, commercial properties, and public infrastructure sites were damaged during the assault. Rescue workers pulled survivors from the rubble while medical teams treated the wounded.
According to local officials, the deadliest impact occurred in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, where multiple fatalities were reported after a residential area was struck. Other districts, including Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi, also suffered extensive damage. Fires broke out in several locations, forcing evacuations and complicating rescue efforts. Authorities indicated that some victims may still be trapped beneath collapsed structures.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service stated that at least 23 to 30 people were injured, including children. Hospitals across the city received casualties with injuries ranging from minor wounds to critical trauma. Officials warned that the casualty count could rise as emergency personnel continued clearing debris and searching damaged buildings.
The attack represents one of the most significant assaults on Kyiv in recent weeks and highlights the continuing intensity of the war, now entering its fifth year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes and renewed calls for stronger international support, particularly in the area of air defense. He emphasized that Ukraine urgently requires additional missile interception systems to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from repeated attacks.
Military officials reported that Russia launched a combination of ballistic missiles and drones during the operation. While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept some incoming threats, several missiles penetrated the defensive shield and struck targets within the capital. Ukrainian authorities noted that shortages of interceptor missiles have placed increasing pressure on the country’s air-defense network.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes were aimed at military-industrial and logistical facilities supporting Ukraine’s war effort. Moscow has consistently maintained that its military operations target strategic infrastructure rather than civilians. Ukrainian officials, however, argue that repeated attacks on urban areas demonstrate the continued threat posed to civilian populations living far from active front lines.
The latest attack also caused damage to diplomatic and public facilities. Reports indicated that buildings in several neighborhoods suffered blast damage, and some foreign diplomatic properties were affected by shockwaves and debris. Local authorities temporarily closed roads in impacted districts to allow emergency responders access to damaged sites.
Residents described scenes of panic as explosions illuminated the night sky. Many spent hours in underground shelters while emergency sirens echoed throughout the city. Witnesses reported shattered windows, damaged vehicles, and power disruptions in affected neighborhoods. For many Kyiv residents, the attack served as another reminder of the persistent dangers facing civilians despite extensive defensive measures.
International leaders and organizations expressed concern following the strike. Western governments have repeatedly condemned attacks that result in civilian casualties and have pledged continued support for Ukraine. Discussions regarding additional military aid, including air-defense systems, are expected to remain a central topic among Ukraine’s allies as Russian missile and drone attacks continue.
The attack comes amid ongoing fighting along multiple fronts in eastern and southern Ukraine. While ground combat continues, long-range missile and drone strikes have become a defining feature of the conflict, affecting cities across the country. Ukrainian officials argue that strengthening air defenses is essential to reducing civilian casualties and protecting key infrastructure from future assaults.
As rescue operations continue in Kyiv, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow air-raid warnings. Emergency crews remain on-site in several districts, searching for survivors and working to restore essential services. The latest strike underscores the continuing human cost of the war and the challenges facing Ukraine as it seeks to defend its cities against increasingly sophisticated aerial attacks.
With casualties confirmed and damage assessments still underway, Kyiv once again finds itself at the center of a conflict that shows little sign of ending. For the families affected by the overnight attack, the focus remains on recovery, rescue efforts, and mourning those who lost their lives in one of the capital’s deadliest recent assaults.
