Michelle Obama: Another Phenomenal Woman Calling for Change

Have you seen the 2020 Netfix Special of our favorite first lady?

I'm taking a moment to reflect on former First Lady Michelle Obama's Netflix Special last year in 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic.

As expected, the First Lady's special program was uplifting and reflected nothing but a positive tone. I personally found the program to be extremely empowering to women, and in particular to black women like me.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Netflix was among the many online entertainment platforms that die-hard stay-at-homers were able to enjoy.

I live in Los Angeles, California, where Governor Newsome showed justifiable respect for the seriousness of the virus, as was evident by his stay at home orders, early on during the pandemic.

When I wasn't busy writing or trying to find something else productive to do, I watched a hell of a lot of Netflix.

The night that the Michelle Obama Netflix special called "Becoming." first aired, I was super excited to watch it. I could hardly contain myself.

I was thinking about it recently, and decided to add her to the list of phenomenal black women that I wanted to write about. Although Michelle Obama is the epitome of a phenomenal black woman, I chose to publish this particular story under the "social change" category tag.

This is because, to me, that is what is most impressive about this phenomenal African American woman; her desire to see social justice, and above all, social change.

That desire is not limited to just people of color, but she desires to see justice for people everywhere, especially young girls and women. That is who her message was directed to in the "Becoming" Netflix special.

Not only did I enjoy how entertaining and forthright the former First Lady was in the video special, but I noticed how a distinct message of hope and unity was being sounded throughout the program.

A Black Woman's Message of Hope

As always, I found the words coming from Michelle Obama to be very positive and very powerful. According to this dynamic woman who is still so deeply admired:

"I remain hopeful that people want better. If not for themselves, for the next generation."

These words were spoken about all people, not just black, brown, red, and yellow, but white America as well.

The former First Lady appeared to particularly enjoy spending time with the young women in the video, and bring words of encouragement to all of them. The young women were equally impressed with what the First Lady had to say, as they were with the phenomenal black woman herself.

Everything about her came across as positive and uplifting. At the time, it made me wonder if even the Trump supporters would eventually get tired of his never-ending message of hate.

If ever there was a time when the nation called out for social change, was in 2020, during a worldwide revelation that Black Lives Matter.

Social Change Needed

In a COVID-19 world of civil unrest, and where people were dropping dead like flies, there was a definite need for words that could unite the nation.

The need for social change was finally catching on like wildfire. Unlike the former administration at the time, Michelle Obama's words showed how much she recognized this need. This was anything but the time for political squabbles.

Unity is what eventually led to us finding vaccines for the corona virus, much faster than the hate talk that was being spewed by a racist Republican administration. The only thing the former administration brought to the table in 2020 was hate and blame.

The Trump presidential bully pulpit was used in a variety of scandalous ways. His so called leadership was the kind that encouraged armed citizens to angrily protest a governor who was trying to keep his citizens safe?

People were worried, and rightly so. The president was busy undercutting the health professionals, instead of taking the lead from them during the pandemic.

In sharp contrast to the message of hope in Michelle Obama's words, the former president chose to create an atmosphere of hate, at a time where hope was needed more than ever!

Michelle Obama's Book

With all the above concerns to be worried about, I applaud Michelle Obama, for her book and for the Netflix special.

She is clearly trying to help keep hope alive, and she encourages each one of us to do the same.

I haven't read Michelle Obama's book [Becoming], but the 32,530 ratings on Amazon indicate that 89% of the readers gave it a 5 star rating. I guess I'll be reading the book soon, if I can ever stop watching Netflix.

The purpose of writing this is not about trying to make a political statement, or take an opportunity to bash the former administration; but rather, I wrote it to inspire, uplift, and encourage readers.

If you choose to take time to view this special, you will be motivated by Michelle Obama's words of hope and unity.

Do not be deceived by the lying tongue of hate, but instead, embrace the truth that lies in a message of hope.

REFLECTIONS

For those readers who may not have had an opportunity to see this 2020 Netflix Special, I encourage you to check it out wherever, and whenever you can. It is definitely worth locating it online, and spending some time checking it out.
