Ending a Relationship Because of a Difference in Opinion, Specifically Political Ones

People tend to frown upon those who do this. Here is why they're wrong.

Politics are extremely controversial and there are different sides to every issue. People tend to frown upon those who end their relationship with someone because of a difference of opinion, but when it comes to politics this "opinion" matter. There are people that think politics are just an abstract concept that only matters during elections, but every single person in this country and in the world is impacted by politics. Thus, someone's opinion on political issues is extremely important. The other thing is that when it comes to politics it is not just a difference in opinion, it is a difference in morals. There are people that say "It's just a difference in opinion, you should not end that relationship" and they say that as if the issue is "Does pineapple belong on pizza?" or "Which is better, Marvel or DC?"

The answer is clearly Marvel, but that is beside the point; the point is that politics is not about pizza or superheroes, or sports, politics are whether or not you think gay people should be able to marry, whether or not you believe women should be able to choose what they want to do with THEIR bodies, whether or not you think immigrants should be locked in cages, this is so much more than insignificant trivial things. I would never end my friendship with someone because they go for a different soccer team, but how am I supposed to stay friends with someone who believes that I should not be able to control my body, who thinks gay people don't deserve rights, who think religion should dictate the law? How? Privileged demographics (white, male, straight, etc.) often hold racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. opinions and they try to justify those opinions by saying "That's just my opinion" and they try to act superior by making it seem you're the one who is not open to other opinions. NEWS FLASH SEXISM IS WRONG, HOMOPHOBIA IS WRONG, RACISM IS WRONG, ALL DISCRIMINATION IS WRONG ALWAYS NO MATTER WHAT. What people do not seem to comprehend is that when it comes to abortion, LGBT, POC, etc. LITERAL lives are on the line and those opinions become more than just opinions—it's whether or not people will die. It is a privilege to view political issues as simply a matter of opinions because for many of us it is about life or death. It is disgusting when people try to demonize minorities when those sexist, homophobic, etc. opinions are DANGEROUS.

Also excusing someone's past bigotry as "a product of their time" erases everyone who fought against that bigotry while also living in that time and honestly, the whole "they were raised in a different time period" is such bullshit. If my grandmother who was raised in a Mexican household isn't a homophobe then yours should not be homophobic either. There were white people who were not racist during slavery, SLAVERY, and you're telling me that we should not hate someone for their racists opinions. If there were white people who were not disgusting racists during slavery then there is absolutely no excuse for someone to still be racist today. Also being raised in a certain time period explains why someone is a racist, homophobe, etc. but it does not in any way excuse it. I don't think people understand that being intolerant of bigotry is not the same as being a bigot. Being intolerant of racism isn't the same as being intolerant of races. Being intolerant of homophobia isn't the same as being intolerant of the LGBTQIA+ community. This is not two sides of the same argument. "All opinions are valid." Yea when it comes to movies, sports, clothes, etc. NOT WHEN IT IS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT SOMEONE DESERVES RIGHTS. Somebody's political opinions is their morals, their worldview, their ethics. It is completely valid to end a relationship with a lover a friend a family member, anyone. Racists, homophobes, sexists, etc. are terrible and they're wrong. They don't deserve sympathy. Don't let anyone tell you that you are being overdramatic. This is your life, fuck the Nazis.
