An Open Letter to Express My Grievances to an Illegitimate and Inappropriate POTUS

Dear #45,

It’s hard to choose the words to communicate with you. I don’t have any comparable person in my life as an example to gauge how to proceed. Because, unlike you, the majority of people I know and routinely interact with are kind and moral. They have a sense of right and wrong, they have empathy and a conscience too.

Even the people I know who profess to support you are people who would never be as hateful and thoughtless as you. They wouldn’t endorse racist hate groups, they wouldn't puppet for corporate bullies, or bully for duplicitous gain, and they certainly wouldn’t be so vile as to openly try to grab women by their pink parts without expressed consent. Most wouldn't even be disrespectful enough to utter "that word."

So, when trying to formulate the words to get through to you, I freely admit that I have no experience interacting with such a deplorable and contemptuous person. As such, I am (nearly) at a loss.

Nevertheless, I intend to persist.

If you were a child, I’d break it down into simple terms. Perhaps I’d say, “Honey, don’t be a bully,” or “God don’t like ugly,” or “Shame on you, you little shit.” But you’re not a child. You are a full grown man, and although you behave childishly, your choices are far from innocent. I believe you need harsher penalties for your immaturity and your maliciousness. A “time out” or a “go to your room” just ain’t gonna do it.

If you were a moral person, I would try to appeal to your compassionate side. I’d ask you to rethink your alliances, empathize with the rest of us, and choose your words and deeds more carefully. But you’re not that guy. It has become appallingly obvious that your contempt for the rule of law and your disrespect for those who oppose you is your driving force.

How can any sane-minded, intelligible person get through to a philanderer, a sociopath, a fascist such as yourself? This is, of course, a rhetorical question, because I don’t imagine you or anyone else can answer this.

My only option is to just plow forward the only way I know how, and hope that, if you can’t comprehend where I’m coming from, perhaps some of your less-fanatical fan base will. Because certainly, in the plight to save our country from plummeting backwards in history, your followers have the potential to play a leading part—for the better or for the worse. My earnest hope is that they will take off their blinders, open their eyes, and see through your gaslight to the truth you attempt to obscure.

It’s true. I’d like to save their lost souls from the false prophecy of Trump.

So Donnie, here it is in a nutshell... you appeal to the worst part of society. You are a contemptuous spoiled bully with a fragile ego. You routinely lie to get your way and to make yourself appear to be more than you actually are. And the saddest part about it is that there are a select group of people that just eat that shit up. You spoon-feed them an excuse to throw their good manners to the wayside and you embolden their bad behaviors.

You play on the fear and hatred that people have wrongly stamped on the foreheads of those who look, live, and pray differently than them. You have allowed that fear and hatred to fester and boil over into our streets and even into our homes. You have given your blessing to the easily-led to carry their prejudices into their churches and into our work places.

And this is unacceptable.

The religious extremists that you have underhandedly recruited to do your bidding have branded MAGA into their golden calf and paraded it around like it’s their personal messiah. Their failure to comprehend that hate speech is to gospel as you are to Christ is proof positive that they are incapable of rational thought—and that you are the antithesis of every single thing their Jesus taught. These are the people responsible for making you into their gold-plated deity and you reward them by answering their blasphemous prayers with sinful gifts of disunion.

And as far as your soft-core Bible-lovin' followers—the ones who really are blinded by your gaslight, the ones who don't wear pointy hoods or Nazi emblems—well, just shame on you for manipulating their predisposition to trusting in blind faith. Shame on you. You better hope there's no hell.

Because as the saying goes, Jesus would slap the shit out of you.

Your loyalty to religious extremists, white nationalists, war profiteers, corporate thugs, environmental assassins, and foreign despots is as foul and rancid as theirs is to you. Frankly, it disgusts me. And frankly, YOU disgust me.

If you were a guy raised in my hometown, you wouldn’t have been allowed to eat supper at my family’s dining room table. You are a thief, a cheater, and a liar of the worst sort—the exact kind of deviant person we were taught as children to steer clear of under any circumstance. And I can’t help but wonder how a person like you is even allowed out in public, much less how you were given access to our highest elected office.

The answer, I am realizing, is that there are many more racists and bigots in our country than I previously thought possible. There are also so many more ignorant people that refuse to listen to reason or educate themselves in the basics of history and current events than I could ever have imagined. And the others that don’t quite fit these categories? They are simply apathetic—which may, in fact, be equally as dangerous.

And although you mean nothing to me—you’re just a faded, corroded, decayed epitaph on an archaic shrine—the fact that there are so many humans who follow your pied piping scares the total fucking hell out of me.

It is for their souls that I pray for redemption, as it is obvious that yours is already charred black and irredeemable.

What, you may ask, is my point here? I don’t suppose I actually started this letter with a precise point. Rather, I needed, desperately, to say out loud to you, as best I could, that you are so much more than a disappointment. You are more than an embarrassment. You are a literal threat to people’s basic attempt at liberty, justice and equality. Your (lack of) ethical principles endanger people’s lives—not only in the continental United States, but across the world.

And I suppose, if I need to validate this correspondence with a “point,” it is to let you know that WE SEE YOU.

You wanted the spotlight, the center of the stage, and you wanted those things despite the horrendous cost to others—so you have it. Dirty money and your filthy alliances have purchased your golden cathedra. You are unfortunately, inappropriately, and unsuitably sitting on the top of our world and we fucking see you.

We know what you are, and we will continue to do our collective best to keep you from causing any more harm.

We are working diligently, in political arenas, in school houses, in places of worship, in quiet small towns, in vast metropolises, and even in the big White House that you and your corporate cronies have infiltrated. You have the power of influence and money, but we have history and authenticity and diligence and the power of the majority on our side—we have truth and justice where you have lies and manipulation—and you are outnumbered.

I want you to know that we are not merely protestors marching off our discontent. We are not as vulnerable or fragile as you may like to believe. Your hooded goons can light their torches and try to run us down in the street—but nevertheless, we will not be silenced.

We will persist.

We are teachers, doctors, lawyers, business owners, artists, farmers, scientists, students, ministers, patriots and protectors. We wear blue collars and white collars, hijabs and sombreros. We are red and yellow, black and white. And WE, The People—the majority of these United States—are working fastidiously to correct the damage you’ve done.

If you only hear one thing I’ve said, let it be this:

We will never stop our efforts to remove you from your position as the President of our United States. We will never stop working to protect the victims of your xenophobia and bigotry, to restore the integrity of our democracy, to reclaim our civil liberties, to shelter those seeking refuge, to lift up the oppressed, to stand up for equality, to protect our natural resources, to demand justice, to bring nourishment to those who hunger, to provide healthcare to those who are ill, to regulate corporate polluters, to be paid a living wage, to educate those who seek knowledge, to prevent the misuse of our soldiers, to bring peace to those who are victims of war—and we will never stop working to amplify the voices of those you would have silenced.

Your days of tyrannical control, just as those of the autocratic rulers who came (and failed) before you, are limited in number. However, the will of the people to drive out tyranny is perpetual.

As you sink lower into your swampy pit of deceit and malevolence, still we rise. We will not sit down, we will not shut up and we will not behave.

We are the resistance.

Signed,
