Dear Donald,

Please, pay attention.

Dear Donald,

Most people are never truly ready to confront their abuser, but at least this time I get to do so personally. You have single-handedly turned my friends, this country, and half the world upside down; but America will be great because of it. Please pay attention. Maybe find a friend to talk this over with. It is time you gainfully grasp why being called a Trump supporter is not a compliment.

I was raised to respect the political views of others. It was never the topic of discussion outside of family and sometimes school. I thought it was a silly rule. Surely people old enough to vote could disagree about who they are voting for and remain civil. Apparently not. It never occurred to me as to why there were such practices like this in place until your term. Well, there was that one time that Obama was elected for his second term. My manager at my serving gig told us not to talk about the election. She said that most of our regular customers might be upset this morning, and to expect our tips to go down a little this week. Sure enough, a fair amount of my regular customers were visibly disturbed. Some looked truly angry. But that was it. After a month or two of the news exaggerating the upset, things went back to normal.

The problem that everyone has with your supporters is things never went back to normal. The signs stayed in the yards. The hats were worn everywhere. Suddenly, the talk about political views felt different with family, and impossible with friends. For some reason, supporting you meant something different than supporting any other republican president. Supporting you meant that several racially charged stereotypes could be used to justify how some Americans are treated at any time. Supporting you meant that some people do not deserve basic human rights because America needs more resources for Americans. It became painfully obvious that the friends and family that supported you, could no longer fully support me.

The jury is out on how great America was, but no one can deny how great it is. You almost ruined that too. Never have I ever felt the animosity of an election last the next four years and presumably many more to come. Unfortunately, you struck a nerve that several did not know they had. You enabled millions of Americans to disregard common decency for personal gain. You took advantage of the friction that came along with our growth during the Obama administration to resurrect the dying memory of your father’s America. That America was only great to people who looked like you and your father. Thanks to you, the people who think like you and your father have been identified, and the people who want better for All Americans can finally get to work.

Great work must be done to mend the divide you have caused. I know, you did not mean to cause separation in the country, so you say. Yet your supporters sport confederate flags and you are not from the south. The southern heritage that you hid behind for years ultimately led to the swift wave of blue that ended your chances of a second term. As a Georgia voter, It feels good to see that everyone is not stuck in the mind frame of you and your not so humble beginnings. You turned a blind eye while your supporters fanned the flames of a race war fire for years and masked it in the form of patriotism. In case you did not know, that makes real patriots sick to their stomach. Real people were terribly affected by your mockery of a presidency, and I am happy to see you leave the white house.

The dramatic end of this presidency should be a new low for you. Like anyone who is at rock bottom, I hope you can learn from this. Understand the damage you have caused this country and own it. The only way to gracefully recover from this is to acknowledge the pain your actions have caused the citizens of this country. You must address the fact that your name brings on some of the same feelings of hurt and segregation to the citizens of today that minorities felt in the great America of yesteryear you speak so highly of. You must last but certainly not least, be honest with your supporters. You owe them a huge, huge apology. Tell them you did not do such a good job. In fact, you did a very bad job, and you are sorry. If you say it nicely, they might believe you. Goodbye Donald Trump.

Love,

Georgia
