A number of countries, Wednesday (01/29/2020), began to evacuate their citizens from the city of Wuhan, in Hubei Province, China which is the center of the corona virus outbreak.
The stone-type corona virus has so far killed 132 people and infected more than 6,000 others in mainland China and several other countries.
An airplane carrying a number of Americans left Wuhan for Anchorage, Alaska. Arriving in Anchorage, the passengers will be rechecked to ensure that the virus is not infected. Some hospitals have been prepared to treat or quarantine those who might be infected. The plane will then depart for Ontario, California.
A Japanese-owned charter aircraft carrying 206 people from Wuhan was reported to have landed at Tokyo's Haneda airport on Wednesday (1/29/2020) morning.
The British government issued a warning for "all but the most important trips" to mainland China amid a new type of coronavirus.
The Hong Kong leader will close all railways linking the region to mainland China and halve the number of flights to stop transmission of the virus.
South Korea also said it would send planes to bring home its citizens. Likewise, France, Mongolia, and several other countries.
China has blocked all access to Wuhan and 16 other cities in Hubei Province to prevent people from leaving the city and further spreading the virus. This policy has made more than 50 million people trapped inside the city.
Japan Send 20,000 Masks
The Japanese plane that picked up its citizens on Wednesday morning also carried 20,000 face masks and other protective equipment to supply the needs of hospitals in Wuhan, which struggled to deal with so many patients.
Within days Wuhan was building two new hospitals with 2,500 beds to treat the virus sufferers.
Malik Peiris, an expert in virus research at the University of Hong Kong, said the surge in the number of people infected showed a significant human-to-human transmission of the virus, although that could also be explained through expanded monitoring.
Experts Worry Corona Virus Has Mutated
Experts fear that the new virus has spread faster than previously thought, or it might mutate into a new form. Viruses that originate in the corona virus family can also cause the common cold to more serious illnesses such as very acute respiratory infections SARS.
This new virus has flu-like symptoms, including coughing and fever; and in some severe cases, patients have difficulty breathing and pneumonia.
The virus is thought to be transmitted from wild animals sold in a market in Wuhan.
