Azam Baki Plans Active Retirement Without Politics After Leaving MACC will it be smooth sailing ?

Azam Baki, the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), has been embroiled in a long-running controversy regarding his ownership of substantial corporate shares in 2015 and 2025–2026.

Outgoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has made it clear: after more than three decades in public service, he is not interested in a political career. Speaking to reporters after an event in Negeri Sembilan, Azam said he intends to remain physically active after stepping down on May 12, but his future lies in jogging and cycling not in politics .

"I remain in good health and will continue to stay active through activities such as jogging and cycling," he said, brushing aside speculation that he might enter the political arena after leaving the anti-graft agency .

Azam, whose contract ends on May 12, emphasized that his career has always been rooted in public service, not partisan politics. "I am a public servant. My duty has always been to serve the rakyat," he added .

A Career Built on Public Service

Azam first took office as MACC chief commissioner in March 2020, and his tenure was extended multiple times by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong . Over the past six years, he has overseen some of the most high-profile corruption investigations in the country, navigating a politically charged environment while maintaining the agency's focus on enforcement.

His departure marks the end of an era at the MACC. During his leadership, the agency pursued cases involving political figures, business tycoons, and public officials across the spectrum. Azam was no stranger to controversy, but he consistently defended the MACC's independence and professionalism .

A Call for Unity and Continuity

Azam used the occasion to call on MACC officers to remain united and fully support the incoming leadership during the transition. He expressed hope that personnel would put aside internal differences and continue strengthening the institution .

"I hope MACC personnel will put aside internal differences and continue strengthening the institution," he said, adding that he believes the agency's performance and integrity will be sustained under new leadership .

Azam also expressed appreciation to Sultan Ibrahim for the confidence shown in him throughout his tenure, which included multiple contract extensions .

What's Next for Azam?

At 63, Azam is not retiring from life just from public office. He has been an avid runner and cyclist throughout his career, often participating in marathons and charity rides. His plan to stay active through jogging and cycling is consistent with his long-standing personal habits .

But the question many have asked will he enter politics? has been answered, at least for now, with a firm negative. "I am a public servant," he reiterated. "My duty has always been to serve the rakyat."

Whether that stance holds after a few months of civilian life remains to be seen. But for now, Azam Baki is signaling a quiet, active retirement far from the spotlight, and far from the political games he spent his career investigating .

Azam Baki's departure from the MACC closes a significant chapter in Malaysia's anti-corruption efforts. His tenure was marked by high-profile investigations, political pressure, and occasional controversy. But through it all, he maintained that the MACC acted independently and professionally.

As he steps down, his message to his successors is clear: stay united, stay focused, and stay true to the mission. For himself, the future holds jogging, cycling, and a well-earned rest from the relentless demands of public office.

Politics? Not interested. For now, that is answer enough .
