Schitt’s Creek Style

How to replicate Moira Rose

2020’s ever looming lockdown situation had, for me, led to many more hours of free time at home tuned into Netflix. Luckily when feeling jaded from our daily dose of briefings I stumbled across Schitt’s Creek. The riches to rags story line, eccentric yet kind-hearted characters, authentic family dynamic and witty one-liners had me hooked from the first season. There was also a sense of support and community within the wayward town the family was forced to reside in. I felt we could all benefit from nurturing these simple virtues in real life to avoid apathy and best cope with the pandemic which we are all still facing.

The show’s creativity also captured my attention and Moira Rose’s wardrobe and wig assortment had a striking aesthetic appeal. I really admired the way fashion was used to reflect a raw and multi-faceted woman with many moods. Moira’s clothing was almost an armour with which she adorned herself as a way of not losing her previous glamorous and successful identity. I have shared three of Moira’s statement accessory styles that can easily be replicated for anyone in need of some sassy and empowering embellishment.

Statement Necklaces

Channel your inner Egyptian queen/goddess with a gem encrusted bib necklace or add some edge with a longer layered version. The necklace can easily be adapted to a capsule wardrobe and adds excitement to plain fabrics. The necklace is all you need in your handbag or backpack as a tool to transition a look from formal to fun. The chain mail also adds a touch of warrior to your wardrobe. Much like Moira, you can accessorize an outfit with much vigour when you refuse to hide away or be seen as a shrinking violet. Reminiscent of royalty, wearing this bold jewellery also invokes inner strength and a need to be taken seriously without the hassle of an entitlement to a throne!

Feathers

Feathers are a festival favourite and have been symbolic of freedom and spirituality throughout history and remain so currently across many different cultures. Flappers of the 1920s wrapped these around their frame as a bold gesture to their new-found gender liberation. Choose pastel shades for a more feminine feel, as in Season six when Moira wore a pink feathered gown to the premiere of her film with uncharacteristic vulnerability. Weave feathers into your wardrobe in a cruelty-free way by opting for faux feathers. Give a nod to the beauty of nature whilst embracing your non-conformist character by wearing feathers. You can always begin with a single feather if subtlety is more your clothing manner.

Neck Ruff/ Clown Collar

The neck ruff collar was worn in the mid-sixteenth to seventeenth century to aid upright posture, and due to its impracticality it also symbolised a high standing position within society. The collar that Moira wears could also be interpreted as a clown collar. Moira therefore combines grandiosity whilst not taking herself too seriously and maintaining a sense of humour. Similar to the Tudor times when the collar was worn by both the wealthy and the court jesters.

Sustainability and ethical production are currently at the forefront of fashion and replicas of all the above items are featured through a simple search on the second-hand clothing website/app Depop. Alternatively, search for independent boutique across social media platforms. I think we all need a little Moira Rose magic to face the post-pandemic years ahead.
