Lady Gaga- The Meat Dress

Ah the infamous Meat Dress. The meat dress was tied at the time to her protest against the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy and was a statement against the governmental restrictions placed on the rights of gay soldiers. 'If we don't stand up for what we believe in, if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.'

Ever since, the meat dress has become a historical fashion moment that started the 2010s with a bang.

The Royal Wedding Dresses

Kate Middleton kicked it off in April of 2011 when she said “I do” to Prince William in what we believed at the time would be the biggest royal wedding of the decade. Then 6 years later Meghan Markle came along and wedded with Prince Harry for an equally awe-worthy ceremony that is still talked about over a year later.

Middleton went with a classically elegant lace Alexander McQueen gown that featured long sleeves, a V-shaped neckline and an ivory satin bodice, while Markle opted for something more modern style. The Duchess of Sussex stunned in a matte boatneck custom Givenchy gown by Clare Waight Keller that was sophisticated, contemporary and totally beautiful. The memorable look included a double-bonded silk cady with a matte finish and a boatneck that elegantly showed off her collarbone.

Versace Brings Back the J.Lo Jungle Dress

Almost 20 years after she made headlines in the dress that changed the Internet as we know it, J.Lo came in and closed the runway at Versace’s spring 2020 show in a reimagined version of her iconic plunging Versace dress she wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000. The jungle-inspired dress, which is quite arguably one of the most famous red carpet looks of all time, is said to have been the reason for the creation of Google Image Search.

Lopez is quoted with saying this regarding the impact her dress has had: "One dress can change the trajectory of how people dress for the next 10 years. It's a crazy impact that fashion can have and those fashion statements can have in solidifying a personality, a moment, a style, a movement, all of those things. It was a really exciting time."

Rihanna's 2015 Met Gala Look

Rihanna hit the red carpet in a Guo Pei haute couture gown with a very heavy long) embroidered train at the Met Gala. 2015's theme celebrated the museum's Costume Institute exhibition, "China: Through the Looking Glass."

This was the start of Rihanna's streak of dominating the party themes year after year.

It was the start of something big for Pei as well. Pei, who is fresh off a collaboration with MAC Cosmetics and has two garments in the Met’s exhibition, is a go-to designer for Chinese stars like Li Bingbing and Zhang Ziyi. She has been profiled by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Magazine, but her name remained relatively unknown in Western fashion.

Miley Cyrus at the VMAs

Cyrus' dance routine and provocative outfit was the talk of the VMAs in 2013 and continues to follow in the years since, and the former child star is fully aware they garnered a great amount of public attention.

"How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?" Cyrus asked. "Madonna's done it, Britney's done it. Every VMA performance. Anyone that performs, that's what you're looking for. You are wanting to make history."

She goes on to say that it's amazing how much buzz the whole thing has garnered.

"You are thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it," Cyrus said. "I didn't even think about it when I did it because that's just me."

Call me Caitlyn, Vanity Fair Cover

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one is worth a million. Bruce Jenner introduced herself to the world as Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair in 2015. The photo was shot by Annie Leibovitz and tied with an emotional interview in which Jenner talks about her transition. The pose is retro pin-up glam, with Jenner wearing a white corseted bodysuit with long, flowing brown hair.

Since this shoot, Caitlyn was awarded Woman of the Year that year and much of the credit can be awarded to Vanity Fair's article and cover.

Billy Porter Academy Awards Tuxedo Gown

As play on masculinity and femininity, the tuxedo gown is now notorious for challenging the rigid Hollywood dress code and was boundary-pushing in all the right ways.

When describing his first moments with the gown, he said: "I felt alive. I felt free. And open, and radiant. And beautiful! Which has not always been the case for me. I haven’t always felt so good about myself. It really is astonishing how much of an effect clothes have on your spirit. My aunt Dorothy used to always say, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” That’s why I look good every time I leave the house. I want to run shit. From this [Oscars] moment, I want people to understand that you don’t have to understand or even agree with other people’s authenticity or truths, but we must all respect each other. People are going to be really uncomfortable with my black ass in a ball gown—but it’s not anybody’s business but mine."

Kim Kardashian 2013 and 2019 Met Gala

In recent years, Kim Kardashian has become a Met Gala staple. This year, her tight-fitting gold dress was no exception. She made her grand entrance to the 2019 Met Gala, wearing a skin-tight dress nude dress that may or may not defy the laws of physics. The reality star showed up to the event wearing a nude, body-hugging Mugler dress that made her waist nearly invisible, dripping in beads and sequins.

But six years ago, Kardashian was not yet the belle of the Met Ball. In 2013, she was invited as West's guest. At the time, she was pregnant with the pair's first child, North, and wore a long floral print Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress.

Despite feeling insecure, Kardashian said she gave into Tisci's suggestion for a stretchy floral print. But then the memes started rolling in.

“I think Robin Williams even tweeted it, said I looked like Mrs. Doubtfire,” she said. “I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it.”

Cher 2010 MTV VMAs

The highlight of the MTV VMA’s was undoubtedly the appearance of pop legend CHER presenting the award for best video of the year to Lady Gaga.

Cher showed that she’s still got the curves and after twenty years after the release of Turn back Time wore her infamous battleship outfit with leather jacket.

Cardi B 2019 Grammys

Cardi B looked like beautiful undersea creature at the 2019 Grammys. She showed up in a dress that emulated an oyster shell where she was the pearl, a design by Thierry Mugler.

She saved the Grammys red carpet that year, as the carpet was mostly filled with mermaid dresses.

2018 Golden Globes- Black Dress Code for #MeToo

In the wake of #MeToo, people understandably wondered whether the red carpet even mattered at all anymore. The 2018 Golden Globes was proof that it still does, and it's importance to being a place for freedom of expression is realized more than ever now.

A great amount of red carpet coverage went to the eight activists who were guests brought by A-list actors – Saru Jayaraman, Ai-jen Poo, Tarana Burke, Rosa Clemente, Marai Larasi, Mónica Ramírez, Calina Lawrence and Billie Jean King. This brought a national primetime spotlight to issues that never get the spotlight. Some of these issues include domestic care work, the One Fair Wage campaign and farmworkers’ rights.

As the Harvey Weinstein fallout and the numerous #MeToos that followed showed us, the fallout of that kind of culture are profound. Not even the most well-known women in the world are immune to the sexism, discrimination and violence that follows.

Beyonce Twins Reveal

One month after the internet exploded over rumors that Beyoncé had given birth to twins, she made it official in the same way she broke the news of her pregnancy: on her own terms, with an Instagram post early on Friday morning.

Throughout her pregnancy with the twins, Beyoncé used Instagram to document her style, turning out photos that were artistic, glamorous and skillfully staged.

The picture showed her holding the babies while wearing a colorful, silk organza, floral and ruffled Palomo Spain spring 2017 coat open to reveal blue underwear, paired with an aqua veil, posing in front of a flower display with an ocean backdrop.
