Kim Kardashian West’s shapewear brand SKIMS has taken over social media by storm since it was first launched in September. Celebrities such as Ashley Graham and Sofia Richie have worn SKIMS and have showered it with praises mostly due to its comfortable fabric. Even Kim K’s billionaire sister Kylie Jenner got into the act and put out a social media post, promoting the SKIMS garment.

But that isn’t to say that everything about this product has been smooth. The launch of Kim Kardashian’s latest venture was riddled with a great deal of controversy due to the cultural appropriation allegations. It just so happens that the shapewear was initially named Kimono, which many people found to be disrespectful towards the Japanese culture. But to her credit, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star was quick to apologize to the fans and change the name to SKIMS.

While the SKIMS shapewear is designed to enhance your shape, they’re pretty photogenic on their own as well. Kim K herself has demonstrated this in a series of videos on Twitter.

And this brings us to an important point. Most of the marketing for SKIMS has been done through the founder’s Twitter account and to an incredible degree of success.

While other brands invest millions in marketing, buying billboards, TV time and ads on platforms like YouTube –SKIMS CEO uses her reach on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for promoting her business. This is an art that the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan has seemed to master.

Google Trends of SKIMS for the past 12 months paints a fascinating picture.

Evidently, the biggest spike in the trends is seen when the reality TV star launched the shapewear line back in September. But the later rises in SKIMS are powered by the celebrity through her social media.

As most people know, Kim Kardashian has a massive following on social media. With more than 29 million likes on Facebook, 63 million followers on Twitter and 157 million followers on Instagram –she’s one of the most influential celebrities in the digital sphere.

A single tweet by her often sees hundreds of thousands of impressions. When the SKIMS founder shared a cute video of her daughter Chicago West feeding her cousin some lunch on January 14th, the tweet accumulated around 250,000 likes. Some of her other tweets see a similar reaction.

“It’s incredible how much pull she has on websites like Twitter and Instagram”, says Julia Markle, the Digital Marketing head at ClothingRIC –a website that promotes coupons for brands such as SKIMS. “On our website alone, there are significant jumps in traffic whenever Kim Kardashian puts out a Tweet on SKIMS.”

With the 6th rank on Social Blade, Kim Kardashian West’s digital footprint is bigger than many corporations that have entire departments dedicated to social media.

And with the website highlighting the steady growth of her followers, it’s safe to say that Kim Kardashian West will be an absolute internet phenomenon for the days to come.
