Do your glasses slip often? And you have to adjust your glasses every time that happens. Or your glasses leave marks over your nose.

You are wearing the wrong glasses.

Your glasses are too big on your face that it keeps slipping or too tight that it leaves marks behind. Wear glasses that are of the right fit for your face. But how to find the right fit of frames for your face.

Know your three sizes

Just like clothes, you need to know the right size to get your glasses made. These sizes are

  1. Lens width - This denotes the width of your lenses. For example, if your lens size 52, then your eyes are about that size.
  2. Bridge width - the width of your nose bridge where your glasses will sit on.
  3. Temple Length - The length of the temple of your glasses, from the glasses part to the end behind your ear.

These sizes are often mentioned on the inner side of the temple arm. Numbers like 52-18-145 on the inner side of your glasses are your glasses size. The first number is your lens width, the second one is bridge width and the last one is the temple length.

Some glasses have four sizes mentioned. The fourth one is lens length. This measurement is important when you are buying varifocal glasses or bifocal glasses. If your older glasses have these sizes mentioned, you can order glasses online in that size.

How to measure?

If your glasses don’t have the three sizes mentioned or the numbers got rubbed off because of long use, then you can simply measure the size of your glasses.

If you are buying glasses for the first time, you can measure your pupillary distance. Pupillary distance is the distance between the centre of one eye to another. Usually, PD is mentioned on your eye prescription slip. Either PD or dual PD is mentioned on your slip. Dual PD or dual pupillary distance is the distance of the centre of your one eye to the nose bridge. Your prescription slip mention something like 32/30 or OD 32 and OS 30. Here, 32 means the distance of the centre of your right eye to the nose bridge and 30 is the centre of your left eye to the nose bridge. OD (oculus dextrous) means right eye and OS (oculus sinister) means left eye.

Taking measurement by yourself will be confusing, it will be better for you to get an eye test done and take PD measurements. You can provide this prescription online and get it made accordingly.

Glasses are generally made in three standard sizes -

  1. Small - below 48 mm lens width
  2. Medium - 48 mm - 55 mm lens width
  3. Large - Above 55 mm

You can do a credit card test to know which size to go for. Take your credit card and place the small side of credit on your cheek. Compare it with your eyes. If your eye is smaller than the smaller side of the credit card, go for a small size of eyeglasses.

If your eyes are as big as the credit card, then choose a medium-sized eyeglasses frame. If your eyes are bigger than the credit card goes for large size frames.

How to find the right size of frames

When you are trying your glasses at home or at the store, take care of a few points -

  • Choose glasses that are not too tight on your nose or too loose around your ears
  • Also, the frames shouldn’t cover your eyebrows
  • Oversized glasses are cool but they shouldn’t be too big that it covers your cheeks. If they touch your cheeks, your glasses will keep on falling off.
  • Try doing the smile test. If your glasses move up when you smile, then don’t buy those glasses. Those are too big on your face.

If you are worried about glasses leaving marks on your nose, then buy glasses frames with nose pads that are fixed. The Adjustable nose pads supported by metal pad arms are leaves marks on your nose. The fixed nose pads will slip off if you don’t get one of the right sizes.

Next time when you are buying your prescription glasses or blue light glasses online, then take note of these points and buy glasses that fit right on your face. So that you see comfortably and clearly.
