How to Dress Up for a Princess Party

You can’t wear just any old thing to a princess party. When the little girl in your life receives (or sends!) a royal invite, you have to view it as an Event. Consider it a bonding experience and use the time to come up with a to-die-for outfit. She’ll be anything but a lady-in-waiting when she arrives to spend the day with her regal friends.

Consider the Theme of the Party

A princess party is a theme all on its own — or at least it seems that way. In truth, however, there are all sorts of princesses. A Disney-themed fete is a very popular option. Your little girl might be headed to a party that celebrates the strongest princesses who will readily defend themselves or speak up in the name of justice, for example.

Then again, it could be a party meant to star princesses from another universe, or even a princess story straight out of her imagination. Whatever the case, make sure you pay attention to the theme before choosing clothing and accessories. She’ll want to fit in with all of her friends, so it’s essential to read the fine print before you come to any concrete choices about what to wear.

Pick Out the Perfect Princess Inspiration

Once you have the theme locked in, it’s time to move onto what’s arguably the most important part of the party: the princess’s outfit du jour. While it’s easy enough to cobble together a princess ensemble from dress-up clothes and other odds and ends, that’s not the recommended course of action for a genuine princess party. Again, the little lady attending surely wants to fit in with all of her friends. That means that she needs a to-die-for dress that will make all of her royal pals sit up and take notice.

Fortunately, there are all sorts of options available. Not only can you find princess costumes at the local big-box costume stores, but you can also uncover a world of one-of-a-kind costumes and dresses from online boutiques. Some of them are branded, while others provide an inspired-by take on traditional princess dresses. Whether your little party girl wants to be an ice princess or her castle resides beneath the ocean waves, the two of you should have fun shopping for her costume. Just don’t forget all the small but must-have accessories that will take her look to the next level and ensure that she’s the prettiest princess at the party.

Select Some Sensational Jewelry

Every princess needs a few pieces of jewelry to make her ensemble look that much more dramatic and royal. Have you ever met a princess or queen without a bracelet, a necklace, or a shiny ring to draw the eye? Flashy baubles are as on-point for her outfit as her gown itself.

With that in mind, take some time to pick out a few pieces of jewelry that your princess will love. Bonus points if you select pieces that she can wear again and again. To that end, it’s tempting to purchase costume jewelry, and that’s not a bad idea, either. How else can you afford to give a tween-year-old a “diamond” ring?

However, it won’t hurt to surprise her with a piece that she can wear to other events. You may even think about choosing something she can wear day-to-day as well, not only on special occasions. A pretty necklace ought to do the trick as long as it complements her lovely new dress. A charm bracelet might make her smile, too.

Find Fabulous Footwear

Ah, to find shoes that are fit for a princess. It’s a search that largely depends on the type of princess your little girl wants to be. We know that it’s impractical for a princess to wear glass slippers, even if her ensemble is inspired by the one-and-only Cinderella, but you may be able to find transparent shoes that will do the trick.

In most cases, as long as her shoes match or otherwise complement her dress, then she’s good to go. Since this is a party, however, you want to make sure that she’s wearing comfortable footwear. Whether this is a dance party or a fiesta filled with fun games, she may be spending a significant amount of time on her feet.

Opt for Royal Accessories

She can accessorize with jewelry, but she may need a bit more than that to give off authentic princess vibes. To ensure that she’s the prettiest princess at the entire party, why not get her a tiara? After all, every princess needs a crown. It doesn’t have to be ostentatious — although it certainly can be — but it should set off her dress in some way. A flower crown is another option, although that depends on what type of princess she is. The most relaxed, frying pan-wielding princesses would appreciate a flower crown, but it would look totally out of place in a ballroom.

Put Together a Pretty Hairdo

The last step in creating a princess will be fun for both of you. She needs a royal hairstyle to go along with her fabulous attire. She might decide to follow in the footsteps of her princess inspiration, or she may prefer a hairdo that flatters her face and features. From ornate braids and regal updos to long, flowing curls, she’s spoiled for choices. You can hit up YouTube for a tutorial or, as a special treat, take her to get her hair done professionally.

Can you think of anything else that a little girl will need to dress up for a princess party?
