Removing scratches on eyeglasses.

Sounds unscientific, right?

How can someone remove scratches on the glasses surface using a dollop of toothpaste or whatnot?

From my logical and rational mind, you cannot fix broken glasses with some toothpaste. If you testify that you have indeed removed some scratches on your eyeglasses. Then I bet that was not scratch but a smudge. A very stubborn smudge that smeared your glasses surface.

You can clean the dirt or smudges on the surface of glasses but not the real scratches that have gnawed into the surface.

In simpler terms, your prescription glasses are damaged. Damaged glasses will hamper your vision and you might need to replace your prescription glasses or you can reglaze your glasses and get your old specs with new glasses.

Ways to fix up stubborn smudges and dirt on the glasses surface

1. Use toothpaste

It is easier to clean dirt and dust that accumulates on the glasses surface but not smudges that stick to the surface and don’t come out even after thorough rubbing. You can put a dollop of toothpaste on such smudges. Any brand of toothpaste with non-abrasive or non-gel-based will work out, whether it can clearly clean your teeth or not. But it can clean your glasses surface.

Next, with a cotton ball, gently rub the glass surface and wash it off. The stubborn smudges or scratch look-a-like dirt will come off.

2. Baking soda

If your toothpaste doesn’t work, try out with baking soda. Take a spoonful of baking soda with a half spoon of water and mix it together to make a thick paste. Apply this paste on the surface of the eyeglasses and gently rub it with a cotton ball. Wash it off after the surface appears clean.

3. Vehicle Cleaner Wax

Vehicle cleaner Wax is another alternative. Apply the wax on the smudged surface and rub it with a cotton ball to clean.

4. Metal Polish

You can use metal polish to clean your eyeglasses surface. Metal polish can clean the surfaces of metals and make them shine. You can clean your glasses surfaces with the polish and gently rub them off with a clean cotton ball. Your cheap online glasses with AR coating can get destroyed if you used metal polish on them. The smudge from the surface will be removed and along with it the layer of AR coating will also be smeared. If you have some type of coating on your glasses, then avoid using metal polishes or any hard solution to clean your glasses.

5. Glass Etching cream

Glass Etching cream contains hydrofluoric acid that can clean the surfaces of glasses. You can use the etching cream to clean the surface of your glasses or plastic glasses.

6. Lensguard

Or you can buy a dedicated solution that is meant to clean the surfaces of eyeglasses. You can buy Lensguard from Specscart to clean the surface of your eyeglasses. Lensguard is a mild solution that is good for cleaning eyeglasses. It will not deteriorate the surface of your glasses. By using metal polish or wax meant for cleaning metal surfaces can remove the coating of anti-reflective coating or UV coating on your glasses surface. This can leave a nasty scratch mark on the glasses surface. Use metal polish or wax only when your eyeglasses don’t have an extra AR coating or other such coatings.

Get a lens guard or other eyeglasses cleaner to clean or remove smudges from the eyeglasses surface.

7. Cleaning Kit

Get an appropriate cleaning kit for eyeglasses. You can get a cleaning kit from Specscart with your purchase of online glasses. The cleaning kit comes with a lens guard to clean the glasses and a micro-fiber cloth meant for cleaning the eyeglasses. The micro-fiber cloth cleans the glasses effectively without rubbing off the coatings on the surface. This fiber is smoother on the surface of the glasses. It only removes the dirt and does not harm your glasses surface.

8. Reglaze your glasses

If you find that your glasses are not smudged but are actually scratched, you can send your glasses to get reglazed. You can get new lenses or get your old lenses mended if possible and get them to fit into your old frames. Reglazing is cost-effective and the best solution if you do not wish to change your frame style.

9. Get a new glasses frame

If even reglazing cannot save your glasses frame, you are left with only one solution, that is to buy a new pair of glasses. For your new pair of prescription glasses, you can buy glasses with shatter-proof, scratch-proof lenses that don’t get damaged easily.

Friendly Advice - When you have made up your mind on buying a new pair of glasses, then try out the blue light glasses. If you spend a lot of time in front of your desktop screen then you need these glasses. These glasses can help you in reducing your eye fatigue and headache caused by prolonged exposure to blue lights.
