Eighties style sunglasses have seen a massive resurgence in 2021 and we can thank popular Netflix TV shows for that.

I don't know about you but I have really enjoyed watching shows like Halston, Pose and Stranger things and every time I have rushed to google to see who the costume designers are on the show.

I was born in the eighties myself and up until recently I didn't reflect back with any particular excitement. But after I saw Ewan McGregor rocking a pair of Aviator shades in Halston, I vert swiftly changed my mind. The fact that I have a crush on him, is neither here nor there....(she says.)

This year in particular (2021) the eighties style sunglasses look seems to be bolder and brighter than ever.

Rather than a nod to the decade, we have seen bigger and more opulent styles springing from it.

So what eighties style sunglasses are popular this year?

Yup you have guessed it....

Aviator Style Sunglasses

Not only did Ewan McGregor really rock this style in Halston (as seen below)

but very soon we are going to be treated to Top Gun 2 - The Maverick in November 2021- so we can expect to see Aviators staying cool around that time too.

Here is Tom Cruise wearing them in Top Gun 1.

Pointy Triangle Sunglasses

These have really made a comeback recently and I was delighted to see this on the award wining Netflix series, Pose.

If you haven't seen it- you must. Not only did the series raise huge awareness of the LGBT community, but it also touched on the Aids epidemic of it's day.

The characters are so beautiful and graceful.

As soon as I saw Elektra from Pose wearing triangle sunglasses, I just knew I needed to rush out and buy a pair myself.

Bug Eye Sunglasses

This eighties look has made a huge comeback for 2021 and we absolutely adore this style. Billy Porter has really embraced this look with gusto. Not only have we seen him wear bug eye shades in Pose, but he also wears them in fashion photoshoots too.

The bug eye sunglasses look is so symbolic of this time in 2021. This year is about acceptance, equality and not putting people into boxes.

Billy is the perfect ambassador for this, not only coming out as being HIV positive- but also rocking his own look that challenges gender conformity.

Wayfarers

The eighties wayfarers look is still in fashion to this day and has in fact, never really left the fashion world.

The blues brothers famously wore these in their 1980 film.

Jason Patric also wore a sexy pair in the 1986 film, the Lost Boys.

If you were a child of the eighties you would have most likely have seen the film. I had an enormous crush on most of the vampires, as they were all very fashionable, sexy and cool.

Sunglasses were a key part of the film as the vampires were unable to tolerate the daylight so we get to see the wayfarers in the daylight scenes. The stylists on the film did not miss a trick and used this as a brilliant fashion opportunity.

And yes, I did own a pair of these at the time and I certainly was influenced by this particular film, especially as they were cute bad boys.

Celebrities who wear them now, include Jessica Alba

Daniel Craig seems to wear this style these a lot too.

I think Wayfarers definitely give off a vibe of sexiness, confidence, coolness and authority and that is why they are a celebrity favorite.
