According to a recent survey, nearly half of all Americans wear dirty underwear. For ladies, rocking unclean undies isn’t just a bad idea because it can lead to smelly situation down there; Tommy John, the underwear brand that conducted the shocking survey, says that women are “more at risk than men to experience health issues due to unclean underwear."

But your unmentionables don't have to be soiled to be dangerous; freshly-laundered delicates can be just as bad. According to Board Certified OBGYN Dr. Tristan Bickman, those pretty panties of yours can make things down under get downright ugly by causing uncomfortable and embarrassing health issues. These include yeast infections, which thrive in “warm, moist environments” like the crotch swamps that women so often create when they wear underwear. So unless you want to use your vaginal yeast to bake a loaf of bread, you might want to skip the skivvies.

In addition to avoiding a trip to the gynecologist, another advantage of going commando is that all of your clothes look better. You don’t have to worry about panty lines giving you quadruple butt cheeks, and your butt will have a nice natural jiggle. And don’t try to argue that thongs are the solution to the pantyline problem. You might think that they can’t be as bad as thick cotton bikini briefs because they provide less coverage and let your lady bits breathe a little more, but you’re so, so wrong. That uncomfortable bit of butt floss is one of the fashion world’s most disgusting creations; it spreads bacteria from your butt to vagina, and this can cause nasty infections like thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

So why take the risk of wearing underwear at all? If you’re shy about ditching your drawers and losing that extra layer between your lady bits and the world, just look to the stars for the courage to go commando. Female celebrities often have to forgo putting on panties because of the revealing outfits that their glamorous gigs require them to wear, and quite a few of them have opened up about their decisions to let their lady parts be free. Here’s a look at what a few different famous ladies have said about not wearing underwear.

They say that the secret to being comfortable in front of an audience is picturing everyone in their underwear, but perhaps American Idol star Kelly Clarkson has discovered a better way to stay cool in front of a crowd: by ditching your underwear.

Clarkson was singing the praises of going commando before it was cool. Female celebrities were still get shamed for being caught without underwear in 2008, which is when Clarkson proclaimed that she was anti-undies. Going commando was so frowned upon at the time that a 2008 Reuters article cited Britney Spears being photographed without panties as an example of the “bizarre behavior” that had people questioning her mental health. However, Clarkson wasn’t afraid to let the world know that she wasn't wearing underwear as she became almost as big of a star as Spears.

"Why'd anyone want a little thing up their butt when they can go free?" she said of her hatred of the clothing item.

According to Clarkson, she also considered not wearing panties good luck while she was competing on American Idol, and it looks like her dedication to having one less load of clothes to wash on laundry day paid off in a big way.

Speaking of stars like Britney Spears who have been photographed flashing their lady bits, Kim Kardashian revealed that she knows the secret to avoiding a public Penthouse photo shoot. During a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the spandex-loving social media siren said that she “rarely” wore underwear during her party girl days, but she “was never drinking.” In other words, stay sober if you're worried about the paparazzi making bank from your crotch shots.

That same year, Kardashian told Cara Delevingne that she had started wearing crotchless Spanx underneath her form-fitting clothing. However, during her LOVE magazine interview with the Victoria's Secret model, Kardashian warned that the shapewear is not toilet-friendly.

"But I always pee all over my Spanx, it’s a disaster. They aren’t crotchless enough!” she complained.

“Genie in a Bottle” singer Christina Aguilera doesn’t believe in keeping her lady bits all bottled up (I guess panties don’t rub her the right way). During a 2012 appearance on The Chelsea Handler Show, the "Dirrty" singer declared, "I don't like to wear underwear. I like to be as free as possible at all times. It's just who I am."

It’s funny reading older articles about female celebrities going commando. According to a 2009 Stuff story, Underworld star Kate Beckinsale “caused controversy” when she revealed that she wasn’t wearing underwear during an appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. According to Beckinsale, her bare backside was a bit of an issue for the show's sound crew. Her microphone pack fell off while she was walking onstage, and a large number of male viewers likely missed the rest of her interview after she launched into an explanation for why it wouldn’t stay in place.

“They wanted to hook it onto the back of my knickers, but I am going commando, so they couldn't do it!” she said. “So there was nothing to hook them on so it fell out."

Three years later, Beckinsale explained that she rarely wears underwear because she doesn’t like them, saying that she’ll only don a pair of knickers if she’s “wearing a very short skirt” or “going on a mountain expedition with extra layers."

Sometimes, going commando is not a voluntary decision; it’s something you have to do to avoid getting accused of ruining an angry designer's gown with your visible panties. At the April 23, 2013 premiere of Iron Man 3 in Hollywood, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she wasn't wearing underwear by rocking an Antonio Berardi dress with sheer side panels. The attention-grabbing gown showed off the 22-year-old stripper butt that she was so busy humble-bragging about at the time, but she claimed that she initially didn’t intend to show off so much of her body.

Paltrow said that the dress was a last-minute decision and that she had no idea that it would be so risqué. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she revealed that she also had a hairy situation that made her worry about the possibility of suffering a wardrobe malfunction.

"I kind of had a disaster. I was doing a show and I changed there and I went I couldn't wear underwear,” she said. “I don't think I can tell this story on TV. Well, let's just say everyone went scrambling for a razor."

In case you didn't get what she was hinting at, she went on to say, "I work a '70s vibe. You know what I mean?" Luckily, this incident did not inspire her to add an exclusive, monogrammable $450 razor to her Goop collection.

Gwyneth said that she felt "humiliated" by her commando adventure, but perhaps she should be more worried about women taking her advice to steam their vaginas and getting second degree burns.

Dancing with the Stars judge Julianne Hough was raised Mormon, a religion often associated with underwear (of the magical variety). However, she has confessed to going commando. So was it a divine sign that the Lord was not happy about her decision to ditch her drawers when it almost caused her to suffer a major wardrobe malfunction? She was at a 2013 Golden Globes party when her dress ripped, causing her to worry about her lack of underthings underneath it. The tear also prompted her to put her destructive design skills to the test.

"I ripped it at the seams and it had, like, a little hole on both my thighs... which looked like I couldn't fit in my dress anymore... so I decided to rip the rest," she recounted during an interview on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live. "This is the kind of dress that you don't wear underwear with and I was like, 'Oh, shoot! I better not move anymore or rip the dress anymore because...' That's all I'm gonna say."

Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer might just be the best advocate for going underwear-free. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she revealed that she didn’t wear panties with the tuxedo that she rocked at the 2017 Golden Globes. She seemed downright gleeful about this fashion decision, talking about how much “freer” she felt. She enjoyed her newfound Independence from underwear so much that she decided to tell actor Casey Affleck about it.

"I had so much fun that I bumped into Casey Affleck and I told him, you know... before I knew it I was telling him, you know why I'm happy? I'm not wearing all that underwear," she said.

These ladies prove that there’s nothing crazy about going commando; sometimes our fashion choices make ditching underwear a necessary evil, and sometimes leaving those panties in the top drawer (or on the floor, if you're dirty) is a divine decision that just might help you have the night of your life.
