When we hear the word “bohemian,” many people picture the flower-clad hippies of the 1960s—music, freedom, and a break from tradition. But the roots of the bohemian lifestyle go much deeper and represent far more than just a historical movement. At its core, bohemianism is about deviating from the norm—both in thought and in way of life.
The bohemian soul: a way of life, not a fashion trend
Originally, the term “bohemian” referred to the artists and intellectuals living in 19th-century Paris who deliberately rejected bourgeois conventions. They lived poor but free, valuing art, creativity, and emotion over material wealth. This mindset still lives on today: being bohemian doesn’t necessarily mean wearing extravagant clothes—it means walking your own path, regardless of societal expectations.
Bohemian thinking embraces openness, innovation, and a deep desire for freedom. Through a bohemian lens, the world isn’t black and white. It sees beauty in the everyday and dares to seek new paths, even when the majority heads in another direction. This lifestyle questions traditional career paths and consumerist norms, instead placing emphasis on experiences, human connection, and self-expression.
Bohemianism today: creativity and flexibility
The modern bohemian isn’t necessarily a starving artist. They might be a freelance graphic designer, a digital nomad, or even a teacher using alternative educational methods, for example teach people online from a van. What connects them is a commitment to flexibility and creativity.
But I think you can live boho life from your flat or house too, when you wants to work from home, or you have a little business about handmade products. Or if you wants to live a sustainable and zero waste life, and choose second hand clothes instead of fast fashion.
Bohemianism is about daring to step outside your comfort zone and building a life that truly reflects who you are. Did you realize that, there is more and more people, who moves to nature, their own van or treehouse or other alternative house, because they want a free life without bills?
It’s about embracing life’s uncertainties and choosing to live in the moment rather than striving for perfection. So instead of viewing it as a relic of a past fashion trend, it’s better to see it as a timeless, free, and creative philosophy of life.
The common denominator between the classic bohemian style and today's modern approach is the pursuit of freedom, love of life, openness and acceptance.
I would also include most people with spiritual interests or thinking here, because anyone who has already started to think about the meaning of life and has realized that not everything is about money and wealth, because there needs to be more to life than that, has already embarked on a path that is aimed at refuting current systems.
Obviously not every boho people are spiritual thinker
I think hippies are bohemian people too.
They are already striving for freedom to the extreme, even without work, and the use of mind-altering drugs is accepted by them, which many people, including me, cannot identify.
Bohemian life is therefore a broader concept than we might first think.
Of course, let's not forget travelers either, because the whole style trend started with traveling artists. Today, we find this kind of life in young people who travel and are looking for themselves, but they also belong here with their bohemian thinking.
In summary, bohemian life is a collective term for unconventional lifestyles, which I will elaborate on later.
Of course, I won't miss out on alternative style trends either like fairycore, goblinecore etc.
I think there will be some people among my dear readers, who wants to who likes to express themselves through their clothing.
