Acid Wash Them Thangs

The Jeans of the 80s

There's just something about those acid washed jeans. Maybe it's the fact that it turns a perfect pair of jeans into something not so perfect, into something that looks like it's been worn quite a few times. It adds this retro flare that no other jean can. It can be a dressed up jean or a casual jean. Whichever way you wear it, it's likely to turn heads, especially in 2021.

Back in the day, it was just a jean. There were so many like it that it didn't seem unique in it's style. It was just a pair of jeans that my mother found for cheap in some store somewhere. It went with everything I owned and it could easily hide any mishap of the day. Who would know that it would turn into a look of the 80s and 90s.

With a peak into its history, you can see that it was a jean created by accident. A jean that was a result of stone washing. A jean that spans back to the 50s and 60s. It graced the hips of hippies in the 60s and came back into style in the 80s and 90s. It was the look of rockers with their studded belts and oversized hair.

I do believe that it's a jean that died with its era only to be revived in the early 2000s and then to be killed off again. It was trampled and tossed aside by the bell bottom jeans that every girl seemed to own in the early 2000s. You know, the jeans that made our butts look great and our thighs look slimmer. The jeans that had a certain flare. It became that article of clothing within a pile of clothes stuffed into the attic. A piece of clothing that we all had long forgotten.

Earlier this year, I came upon this fimiliar jean. I was shocked that it was starting to peak its way back into this era after so many years. I tried it on and smiled at how they reminded me so much of my youthful years. They were crinkled at the bottom and a lighter acid wash. I felt that I had somehow teleported back into the 90s. Into that tom-boy kid with the washed out jeans and over-sized shirt. Oh and we can't forget the high-top sneakers that used to pear beautifully with them.

It seems like these jeans are slowly creeping back into the fashion seen with models wearing them from head to toe while walking down a runway. It's a fun trend and a unique one, but who knows how long it will last. It probably stopped by to say hello and remind us all of what used to be.

Maybe that's what it is. A jean that is meant to come and go with the times. A jean that is meant to be a nostalgic surprise. When you put them on, they are not a part of the outfit, they are the outfit. They are the first things that draw in a person's eyes. Maybe that's what is so amazing about them. The fact that they have transcended time and are never truly killed off.

There is a beauty in these strange looking jeans. How perfectly imperfect they are. How no acid wash jean really looks like the other. They all have their own "personality" and their own look to them. They all make you stand out in a crowd. It's a daring look and a look that shows you are willing to take risks in a time of fashion nova and forever 21.
