4 Hidden Camping Areas – Melbourne to Horsham

Horsham is a lovely regional city in western Victoria and has so much to offer. With free camping areas everywhere! From the Regional Art Gallery and Green Lake to the Horsham Botanical Gardens and Barangaroo Boutique Wines. There are plenty of activities and sights for everyone. And being a little over an hour from the South Australian border – your possibilities for travelling and camping from Horsham are endless.

There are some amazing locations to see along the way. And if you’re up for a quick camp, we have compiled a list of 4 hidden camping areas enroute.

Lerderderg State Park

Bordered by other State Parks and Forests, Lerderderg State Park is nestled in between it all, but its truly a breath-taking place. It has some simple and challenging 4WD tracks, river crossings and a dedicated Lerderderg walking track. You can also drive your camper straight through to Lerderderg Campground which have their own toilets! There is plenty to see and you’ll never get bored travelling through here!

Wombat State Forest

Surrounding the outskirts of Lerderderg State Park, Wombat State Forest spreads far and wide with some spectacular mountain views. With plenty of 4WD tracks and hiking trails, you’ll be busy all trip long. A big forest spaces means lots of free camping areas and limited people. Find a nice river to camp by and you’ll be set! And you not only have wonderful scenery but can see a little piece of history too at a mine site.

Melbourne to Wombat State Forest » 1.5h

Langi Ghiran State Park

Just an hour past Ballarat and right off the Western Highway, Langi Ghiran State Park is a perfect hidden camping area for any car and camper. With a free picnic and camping area and toilets, all you need is to set up camp and relax. It has a couple of scenic walking tracks, some 4WD tracks and a hidden lagoon – you’ll find something new every time you camp here. Remember to be careful of those kangaroos!

Wartook State Forest

This area is just off the mountain roads and shares a side barrier with some farms. Wartook State Forest is a relatively flat area, with an easy track for cars and campers. With an abundance of firewood for those cold nights and clearings to see the night sky. With a variety of wildlife – kangaroos, wallaby’s, deer, and emus too! It is a lovely, peaceful area to set up camp for a couple of days – with wonderful lookouts and waterfalls close by.
