The Minecraft Block of the Animal Kingdom

Wombats are excellent diggers. They’re like a cross between a groundhog and a large squirrel, but if that squirrel were a very "sturdy" (read: fat) creature with no tail to speak of. Think of a capybara, but maybe a little less photogenic...

As pictured above, that is a wombat! And here is a crazy thought: Wombats have square poops.

Now, this isn't just some random trivia I found while flipping through a discarded National Geographic (though I’d totally do that, don’t judge). This actually started at my job at Home Depot.

Side-stepping for a second: yes, I’m a writer of fantasy and poetry, but a person has to pay the bills! Retail is how I get by. Anyway, back in Receiving, my boss was looking horribly perplexed about something. He had stumbled upon this odd fact and desperately wanted to know: Why is the poop of these creatures shaped like a dirt block from Minecraft?

Well, boss, and the rest of you lovely readers... I’ll tell you!

The Science of the Cube

A few years back, scientists decided to crack this mystery. By studying the digestive tracts of wombats (specifically those that had unfortunately met a car on an Australian highway: RIP, little dudes), they discovered something fascinating.

Wombats have unique, grooved tissues in their intestines. As their muscles contract, they shape the waste into perfect little cubes. For a Bare-nosed wombat, these cubes are surprisingly flawless.

Here’s why it's so unique:

• Slow Digestion: While human digestion takes a day or two, a wombat’s process can take four times longer. This allows them to suck every bit of nutrition out of their food.

• Dehydration: Wombats are masters at extracting water. Their waste is much drier than ours, which helps it keep that rigid, "Lego-brick" shape.

But... Why Though?

Why would evolution decide "square" was the way to go?

According to researchers like Patricia Yang (who won an Ig Nobel Prize for this, by the way!), it’s all about real estate. Wombats use their droppings to mark their territory. They like to poop on high ground such as rocks, fallen logs, or the mounds of dirt outside their burrows.

If you poop a cylinder on a sloped rock, it rolls away. If you poop a cube? It stays exactly where you put it. Think of it like the ultimate "Keep Out" sign to other animas, that won't roll down the hill! Same as cats and dogs sometimes mark territory to ward off other animals!

The average wombat produces about 100 of these squares a day.

That’s enough to build a small Minecraft hut in about a week.
