Different breeds of dogs have different types of claw growth. Some grow much faster than others. How dogs move can help determine if they really need a haircut now. Many take walks on softer surfaces such as grass fields, dirt paths, or indoors. These types of surfaces do not give strong friction to the claws and do not grind them when animals run and play.

Dogs that spend a lot of time on paved roads or concrete sidewalks receive enough friction from the surface so that their claws grind naturally. But even under such circumstances, sometimes they also need clipping. Too long claws scratch the floor, can scratch the skin and tear furniture, and most importantly, they hurt and injure the pet.

How can a dog's nails be harmed?

When the dog's claws are too long, this prevents them from walking and running properly. Imagine a person who does not cut toenails, this will lead to the inability to wear shoes because of pain. And if the nails bent down, like dogs? He would cut them for sure quickly. The animal needs to do the same. If you hear clatter from the claws on the floor at home - this is a sign that it is time to do a manicure to your pet.

Unclipped claws hurt the dog, and constant adaptation to discomfort can cause joint pain and even arthritis.

They can cling to objects and cause the claw to break or even come off at the root, which is quite painful. And what looks terrible, it’s better not to imagine.

The gait of the dog becomes unnatural and in order to avoid discomfort, the dog tries to find a position in which it is not painful, which often leads to pain and injuries in other parts of the body.

A dog can begin to bite its claws on its own, which can lead to other habits that cause pain, and with it pleasure. And it will grow into a habit of nibbling paws.

How to independently monitor the dog's claws?

Periodically check the length of the dog's claws and take care of its paws. If you notice a strange limp or licking your paws, this may indicate that it hurts. Since the claws of animals can be of different colors, it is sometimes difficult to determine where the blood vessel begins. On colored and light claws, it is easier to determine the cut point, if in doubt, use a flashlight to illuminate where the vessel ends. Dark claws are more difficult, they do not shine through and need to be cut off a little bit.

If in doubt, it is better to take your pet to the veterinarian or dog grooming master. Many dogs do not like when their claws are touched, and professionals know how to calm the animal and how to trim the claws. In addition, they have the appropriate tools.
