We thought she was a boy.

Lola today!!!

My cat, Lola, is one of the greatest surprises we've ever gotten. Mainly because the last thing we wanted was a female cat. But here we are now, four years later with our diva getting more love than ever.

See, about four years ago, one of our two cats had recently passed away, so our home was feeling a little emptier. Lloyd had been a sweet, mellow tabby. Now we only had our old girl Erma, who was getting up in years, to fill the void.

We knew we needed another companion, so at a breakfast with my mom and sister, my mother floated the idea of the three of us looking at some kittens at our local Family Center. (It’s basically a feed store that holds a kitten palooza once a year) Yay for us!!!!

We both jumped at the idea.

Everyone was in agreement that Erma would get along best with another boy, which was fine, because we wanted another man around our girl-filled house anyway.

It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with a kitten that looked more like a kiwi than a living being.

Lola as a kitten.

Kiwi (Not an animal)

See what I mean?

HE was definitely going to be the perfect addition to our family. The cat was so young though, that we left him with the vet for a week to be fixed and to make sure his tracking chip was in place should we ever lose our new family member.

In that week we told my aunt, who had recently lost a cat of her own, about the available kittens. She ended up adopting the blood brother to our cat.

Both families were thrilled about the twin brothers. It was an anxious week, our family was so excited to welcome the new addition!

Finally pick-up day came. My four siblings and myself, (and yes we aren’t really young anymore, but hey, anyone will ride along to pick up a baby as sweet as a cat right) loaded into the car and went with my mom.

Excitement buzzing in the air, my mom entered the vet. With a smile she told them she was here to pick up her cat ect. Great, right?

Well here's the problem, the vet’s answer was something along the lines of “She’s all ready to go!”

That was when something first seemed off. Assuming the woman had spoken wrong, or that maybe my mom had just misheard her, my mom took the cat and came out to the car.

She told us what had happened. Confusion rippled through the car. We re-parked at the pizza hut across the street.

The location of our big discovery.

And I will admit my mom tried to get a look at exactly what surgery our cat had received to halt its re-production, (if you know what I mean)

A man we greatly resembled in that Pizza Hut Parking lot.

All signs and google searches were quickly hinting that perhaps our kiwi looking baby, was in fact, a girl.

Our aunt arrived, we watched as she retrieved her own BOY cat. My mom texted her to come over, so she joined us at the wonderful pizza hut. With minivan doors open, the two sisters compared cat surgeries.

Sufficient to say, one of these things was not like the other.

Lola being her wonderful self.

Laughing, though this was not how we had envisioned our day going, we took our new sweet baby GIRL home.

Lola, as we dubbed her, was the best surprise we could have gotten. She has the personality of a human, the wits of one too, and even years later our sweetheart has the energy we brought her home with. We Love You Lola!
