The price of evolution for courtship

Being "poked to death" by their own horns

Most animals keep evolving, usually to better adapt to their environment, but there are exceptions to everything, and some animals die on their evolutionary path. Today we will talk about the animals that keep driving themselves to their death on the road of evolution. The deer dolphin belongs to the pig family, and its appearance is very similar to that of wild boars.

The deer dolphin generally weighs about 80 kg, and the largest does not exceed 100 kg. The tusks under the mouth protrude out of the mouth and are very similar to wild boars in both shape and appearance. But the difference is that its upper mouth also has a pair of tusks, also protruding out of the body, through its upper jaw and face, which has been growing wildly, in the position of approaching the eyes bent down, it looks as if it can be inserted into the eyes.

The deer dolphin's eyesight is poor, as if related to its tusks, affecting the development of its own eyes, but fortunately, its sense of smell and hearing are well developed, especially the sense of smell, mainly used to find food. While the deer dolphin's body is growing, its upper fangs have been developing along with its body, and it is indeed possible to insert itself into its eyes, or the flesh of its face, thus hurting itself. One has to wonder what the use of the tusks that can get you killed is. In fact, in addition to being able to be used as a weapon, its major role is to attract the opposite sex.

Females prefer males with strong, beautiful, and neat fangs, and they do so by their fangs to attract mates, and if two males are indistinguishable in looks, then they will fight and duel with each other's fangs. They are very principled, not to plug each other to death, but to use their tusks to "arm-wrestle" until one side of the tusk is broken. Although the losing side does not affect the feeding, permanently lost the opportunity to mate, and from then on there will be no female near him. And the winning party, although getting the right to reproduce, but the future may also be killed by their tusks.

Not only the deer dolphin, but the next one also has the same encounter with it, that is the pan sheep. Pan sheep male horns are very large, sometimes even more than 1 meter long, and very heavy, very inconvenient when eating grass, and deer dolphins are not quite the same, their horns are bent downward to form a circle, and then twisted outward in a spiral more than a circle. However, the female's horns are small and generally not so curved that they will not interfere with their feeding.

Pan sheep is a mountain animal, that mainly grows on plateau 1500 meters - 5000 meters, relatively hardy, like open rocky and hilly areas, usually live in groups, dozens of about a group, and mainly eat leaves and weeds. The male's horns are so large that even older pan sheep are starved to death due to the hindrance of their large horns, which prevent them from eating. Although its horns are large, they usually do not injure themselves, bending to grow outward, and some individual males twos inward. This one poor pan sheep had its horns stuck into its skull.

Without human help, this pan sheep can only slowly wait for death, also because of its deformed horns. The horns of the pan sheep are the same as those of the deer dolphin and are mainly used to fight with their kind. They are very large and heavy and make a loud noise when they collide, and the male pan sheep will often have cracks on his horns from the impact. However, pan sheep are polygamous, and males fight each other to get the favor of females, not only by hitting them, but sometimes using their sharp horns until one side admits defeat.

The winning sheep will be selected by the females before they have a chance to be favored. In addition to being physically strong, the main criterion for selection is the presence of strong horns. The largest horns in the herd are often the leading pan sheep, which can gain the favor of more females and thus the right to mate. With the competition of their kind, quality bloodlines are required to breed offspring, and also to make the horns of the pan sheep larger and larger, sometimes preventing normal feeding and becoming a burden to themselves.

After looking at these two animals, both are overgrown for courtship, even hitching their lives and paying too high a price. There are plum deer and they are the same, from time to time because the horns are too large, and the structure is too complex, when fighting entwined inseparably, the weak side will slowly die, strong can survive, and get the right to reproduce, it seems that only the strong can pass their genes, this may be nature's survival of the fittest.
