The fact that fish live only in the water make them different from all other animals.
First Pet... Horror...
As children, most of us grow up with a love for animals and at some point grows a desire to own a pet. “Mommy, can we please have a puppy?” “Dad, can we have a horse?” Put on your best puppy dog eyes, poke out your lower lip, and talk in your best innocent baby voice and you were well on your way to getting what you wanted. Most parents would say: “Yes of course, so long as you take care of it.” Unfortunately for me, it wasn’t as simple as just asking my parents for a pet. I had to abide by their rules, likes, and dislikes.

The first time I decided to start an aquarium, I was so excited! I couldn't wait to get my tank, fill it with tropical decorations, and start buying a whole bunch of vibrantly coloured fish to fill it with! Once I made my decision to start, however, I realized that there was an abundance of conflicting information, which is very confusing to a first time Aquarist! There were so many books and articles, not to mention advice from pet stores, that it was hard to know what information to listen to! It has definitely taken a lot of trial and error to get to a good formula! I have put together ten simple steps that I personally follow to keep a good, clean, and thriving Fresh Water Aquarium!

When you look at that fish you think they only need a tiny bowl, right? They live in a cup at the store you bought them at, so a slightly bigger bowl, feeding little pellets every few days and changing water if you remember is perfectly healthy, isn't it? Sadly, it's not, but pet stores make you think otherwise so they make more money. You wouldn't be so inclined to buy a betta if you knew they need supplies that range from fifty to a hundred dollars, at least in Canada.
How Having a Fish Keeps Me Sane at College
College, or university, is something over two thirds of all high school graduates will attend, and I think it is safe to assume that close to a hundred percent of college students struggle with the requirements of college at some point or another. Whether it be at the very beginning as a freshman, or your junior year after you've finally picked a major, or maybe it waits until your final semester as a senior as you come to terms with that fact that it's almost time for you to be a real adult. Life can be difficult, but this is how having a fish helped me manage it.

Betta fish (commonly called Siamese fighting fish) are easy to take care of as long as they’re in the right conditions. If you leave them living in a cup at home, they’re going to go to the BIG fish tank up in the sky (you know what I’m talking about). I know, doesn’t sound very fun, does it?! So, if you don’t want that to happen, here are a few simple things you need to do to give them a long and healthy life!

Ah, the betta fish; the fish that everyone seems to have but no one seems to be able to take care of properly. Known as “hardy” and “easy to take care of,” they are quickly becoming the more popular choice of an easy fish now that most people are aware that goldfish should not last two weeks but rather 25 years.

According to the International Shark Attack File, there are less than 1000 attacks a year by sharks on humans and only between 10 and 15 of these results in death. To put this into perspective, 1,000 are killed by crocodiles, 1,500 by tigers, leopards and lions and 60,000 from being bitten by a snake. According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, people kill between 20 and 30 million sharks a year in sport and commercial fishing, putting some species of shark on the endangered list.

Because our planet looks blue from outer space it has earned the nickname “the blue planet." 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and 96% of this water is salt water making up the oceans that cover the planet all merging into each other to form the biggest habitat on earth.

Little is known about the mysterious cow shark as it spends most of its life in secret living in the deepest, coldest, darkest parts of the ocean well below the depth most divers reach. Some species, however, do come up to shallow water to give birth and to feed at certain times of the year.
