Let's face it, One of the biggest challenges many people have when bringing a new pup or dog home is potty training. If you are reading this, you probably have a pup that needs to be potty trained. Well, you are in luck because I have got you covered. Say bye-bye to long tiring days of cleaning pee messes and say hello to yellow grass.

Taking the pup outside

When you first bring a pup home you will need to take her/him pee every 1hour - 1 hour 30 mins. You will need to stay outside with them for at least 5 mins. Personally, I have found 8–10 mins is the sweet spot. If they don't go pee and it has been 10 minutes, know that it's okay and try again in an hour from the time. If you have the time to stay longer than 10 mins do so as it will only help. Make sure to have water near the dog so him/she can stay hydrated. A dog won't need to pee much if it doesn't have water.

When your pup goes pee outside you want to tell him/her “good pee, great job peeing, who just did a good pee outside, etc” Essentially use the word pee and associate it with outside and praise her in the process. Then the next time, you go out, tell your dog to go pee or pee time, etc. Link the word pee to outside.

Accidents and what to do

In the case, you do have an accident you need a special cleaning product. While Lysol and other products are good you need a pet urine spray. When you use Lysol, the area and scent might be clean to us but not to the dog. Their sense of smell is soo much better than ours that they can still smell the pee which means they will associate that area with peeing and pee their more. A brand I like and use is Natures Miracle. They have a pet spray that is specifically for cleaning urine. This product is a lifesaver, as on my first day my pup peed 5 times inside.

It is also helpful in the beginning to take your dog to the same spot each time. Keep the way you get to the spot the same. This will help build consistency.

Another way to get your dog to pee outside is to put pee paper towels outside. You do this when your dog goes pee inside, use a paper towel to wipe it, then put that paper towel in a bush or something outside near where she/he pees. This way he/she smells pee outside. This greatness the chances of her/him going pee.

One thing to note is you shouldn't ever say bad dog or bad boy/bad girl. Shaming ing is a no-no. Instead redirect to what you want them to do. This means if they go pee in the house immediately take them outside and let them sniff and do whatever for 8–10 mins. Even if they don't do anything, it is good practice and will help them learn to pee outside.

By using this strategy, my pup who peed 5 times on her first day, didn't pee at all inside the next day other than excited pee which consisted of a few drops here and there. I won't say it was easy, because my first day I spent multiple half an hour times outside with her to try and get her to pee. She didn't pee then but it continues to pay dividends today. Invest in today and see the results tomorrow.

This strategy works but is up to you, the doggy mom or dad to implement. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only an unresponsible owner.

That's the end, so know you know how to get your dog to pee outside. I hope this article helped and you found it helpful, If it helped be sure to give the article a like and follow me as doing so helps me grow as a writer and share my work with more people which results in more people being helped.
