Emily was a veterinarian who loved animals more than anything in the world. She spent her days caring for sick and injured animals, and her nights volunteering at the local animal shelter. She had a special bond with all animals, but there was one in particular who stole her heart.
His name was Max, and he was a rescue dog who had been abused by his previous owner. He was a beautiful golden retriever, with soft, fluffy fur and big, brown eyes. Emily had been working with Max for months, trying to rehabilitate him and help him overcome his trauma.
Max was a difficult case, but Emily never gave up on him. She spent hours working with him, giving him love and attention, and slowly but surely, Max started to come out of his shell.
One day, Emily was walking Max in the park when she saw a man jogging toward them. He was tall, with dark hair and a contagious smile. His name was Jack, and he was a police officer.

As they talked, Max started to bark and growl. Emily was surprised, as Max had never acted like this before. She looked up and saw a man walking toward them, holding a stick. Emily realized that this was Max's previous owner, come to take him back.
Emily and Jack stood in front of Max, protecting him from his abuser. They called the police, and the man was arrested for animal cruelty.
After that incident, Emily and Jack started spending more time together. They went on walks with their dogs, they volunteered at the animal shelter together, and they fell in love.
As they spent more time together, Emily realized that Jack was the perfect man for her. He was kind, caring, and passionate about his work. He loved animals just as much as she did, and he understood her in a way that no one else ever had.
One day, Emily brought Max to the animal shelter to show him to some potential adopters. As they walked through the shelter, Emily noticed a little girl sitting in front of a cage, crying.
She went over to the girl and asked her what was wrong. The girl told her that she wanted to adopt a kitten, but her parents couldn't afford it. Emily looked at the kitten in the cage, and she knew that she had to help.
She called Jack, and together, they decided to adopt the kitten and give it to the little girl. They surprised her at her home, and the look on her face was priceless. Emily knew that she had made a difference in the little girl's life, and that was all that mattered.
As time went on, Emily and Jack's love grew stronger. They got married, and they started their own animal shelter. They took in all kinds of animals, from dogs and cats to pigs and horses. They showed that love and compassion can make a difference in any creature's life.

Turtle Crossing
Bob and Marg were two medium-sized Red-eared turtles. The terrarium they used to live in, was pushed off the table by the two boys, during an impromptu hockey game at the Mackenzie house, one night when the parents were out partying and the baby-sitter was making out with her boyfriend in the Rec-Room in the basement. They somehow made it out of the house and were now living in the wooden foundation of the mailbox located on the front lawn near the curb of 85 Minto Place in suburban Providence, Rhode Island. One day they decided, as only turtles can, that they should make a FAST (and I use that term somewhat loosely) break for the yard across the street. This is the story of their adventure.

Spectating
I can't imagine dying like this, in a place like this; on a cold, dirty pavement with rush hour traffic screaming by and a crowd looking on while paramedics struggle to find space to move. Who could? Deep down we all think there should be a reason, a moment of clarity... or a family presence, at least. For this man, this boy, the rail thin woman lighting a cigarette in a faux fur jacket will have to do - she's been here since the start, her eyes tracking the movement of my shoulders as we fight to keep him on the right side of the line.
